[edit] Synopsis
Crichton is jolted out of an erotic dream about an experience he had with his old girlfriend, Alex: he's about to propose to her when she tells him that she is leaving to go to medical school in California while he is joining IASA in Florida. The crew all wake and gather together after Moya unexpectedly starbursts, and they realize that they have all been dreaming about past lovers; Moya starbust because she believed she heard the distress call of another pregnant Leviathan.
They soon arrive at a planet and discover that they were lured there by some Delvians who are continuing their religious training far from their Peacekeeper controlled planet. They are all being slowly driven mad by their religious explorations, and are seeking assistance from Zhaan, who was able to become a ninth level Pa'u without losing her sanity. Their leader, Tahleen, has therefore sought Zhaan out and implanted dreams of former lovers into the Moyans' minds as a way to call her there.
Zhaan consents to help Tahleen, but when they share unity--a melding of minds--Tahleen painfully wrenches Zhaan's power from her, consuming Zhaan with a dark madness. The rest of the Moyans are unable to help initially because Tahleen has befuddled their minds with illusions. Zhaan's fate rests in the hands of Tahleen's mate, Lorana, who needs Crichton to voluntarily expose his soul in 'unity' with Zhaan. He does so, showing Zhaan how he sees her as beautiful and good, though he also discovers that the crime the Peacekeepers jailed Zhaan for was that she killed her lover while his guard was down as she was having sex with him. This was done because she felt he had betrayed the Delvians to the Peacekeepers. With John's help, Zhaan is able to defeat Tahleen, and take back her power; indeed, she becomes a 10th level Pa'u as a result of her exertions.
