[edit] Languages

I'm a Dutchman hence Dutch is my native language. Because of South African relatives, rather than language similarity, I also speak and write fluent Afrikaans. My English is better than my German but not that of native or near native quality, my French is just above terrible.

[edit] Interests

My interests mainly are related to History, the Netherlands, Culture and Germanic linguistics or a combination of those mentioned above. I rarely edit articles that aren't related to these broad fields, with the exception of reverting vandalism.

[edit] Vices

I tend to get draged away easily, and often lack the ability to stay calm (which doesn't mean I explode in every discussion or edit summary) when people are implementing biases, personal opinions or unreferenced information. I used to act based on what I knew myself on a particular subject. Though I myself was of course aware the information I gave wikipedia was correct, others did think so. Now I've completely embraced the concept of citing sources, and can even get frustrated by people who were like me once...

[edit] My bias(es)

Everyone has a bias. In fact, wikipedia itself has a bias. This doesn't mean however, that fighting biases is wrong, or futile. I pride myself in the fact that I try to counter nationalism. Nationalism is this encyclopedia's number one enemy. I take a look out for all nationalism, but I tend to focus on German nationalism, which I think is one of the most dispicable forms. A people whose nationalism has caused so much hardship around the world, not only to others but to themselves as well, ought to know better. Thankfully, the majority does. It's the minority we should fear.

I systematically do not trust German(ophone) wikipedians who spend much time on articles dealing with Nazi Germany, fascism or the German military between 1933 and 1945. I also do not trust people who engage themselves in historical renaming. For example those who support naming Gdansk to Danzig, I'm convinced a large number of these people have a hidden agenda.

My German bias, should be confused with my fondness of renaming non-English titled articles to English titles, or the removing of surplus non-English terms from articles (after all, this is the English Wikipedia). Although it often concerns German titled articles, I do not specifically target them. I target all articles which I think I can translate accurately into English, principally Dutch, German and sometimes French. Because the Dutch wikipedians rarely uses Dutch titles on the English wikipedia, as do the French, German "targets" form the majority.
