[edit] Introduction
The Revue Cinema is a film theatre located at 400 Roncesvalles Avenue in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, built in 1911 by the Suburban Amusement Company. It operated continuously as a movie theatre from its opening until June, 2006, making it the oldest continously running movie theatre in Ontario. It is a designated 'heritage' property in Toronto.
[edit] History
The cinema operated as first-run theatre from its opening date until 1972, when it became a repertory cinema. It was operated since the 1980s by the Festival Theatres chain of repertory cinemas in Toronto, including the Fox, Royal and Kingsway theatres.
The last show was June 30, 2006, showing "Lawrence of Arabia."
On February 19, 2007, the marquee, known for its tendency to hold water and snow, collapsed, most likely due to the weight of a recent snowfall. Pictures are available at the Torontoist and Northronces.com web sites.
[edit] Efforts To Reopen
The Save The Revue Society, a community-based group is making efforts to work with a local purchaser of the building to operate the cinema in a repertory format.
