Reverend Thomas Carter

Reverend Thomas Carter (1608-1683) was born in Hinderclay, Suffolk County, England.

He married Mary Parkhurst (1614-1687), daughter of George Parkhurst and Phebe Leets, in 1638. He graduated from Peterhouse (St. Peter's), Cambridge University, England.

Traveling to the American colonies, Carter became the first minister to be ordained in the country on November 22, 1642, in Woburn, Massachusetts. A painting by Albert Thompson depicting the occasion of his ordination is currently displayed at the Woburn Public Library.
