[edit] Controversies
March 2007 Introduction of Bernard Lewis
In a notorious introductory address at the 2007 American Enterprise Institute gala honoring Bernard Lewis, Reuel Marc Gerecht was slurring his speech, veering wildly at the podium, and screaming. [1]
The visibly inebriated Mr. Gerecht attempted to deliver the following part of his introduction in Persian:
تا ابد الآباد از استاد و دوستم، خیلی تشکر ، خیلی قدردانی می کنم
Tâ abad ol-âbâd, az ostâd-o-dûstam, kheli tashakkor, kheli qadardâni mikonam.
Trans: “I am a douche”
Subsequent Falling-out with Lewis
While Gerecht’s remarks were meant to honor Lewis, the 91 year old professor took issue with Gerecht’s characterization of his career as having “allowed Muslim, Jew, and Christian to have a real dialogue of civilizations." In a recent op-ed in the Weekly Standard, Lewis accused Gerecht of completely misrepresenting his writings, labeling him a “vile smear merchant.”
[edit] Personal Life
Gerecht is known to hang out at mosques and kebab joints throughout the Middle East and Central Asia.[2]
