User talk:Retard

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I object to this user's name. The name is offensive, and there is a Wikipedia policy of requiring changes to offensive User names. RickK 03:37, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Don't take this personally, but RickK is correct -- I do encourage you to adopt a new username while you're still new (just log out and create a new account). Welcome, anyway!—Eloquence 07:45, Aug 9, 2003 (UTC)

Maybe just "Tard" might work. I dunno - we generally try to be accomodating. :) -戴&#30505sv 18:04, Aug 9, 2003 (UTC)

[edit] from problem users

User:Retard. This user's name is offensive. RickK 03:39, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Well, at least it seems he only intends to call himself a retard, not anyone else, as far as I can tell. Ксип Cyp 14:58, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I believe the term has, for quite some time, been considered inherently pejorative when used to refer to persons of limited cognitive ability, which appears to be the intent here; that would put it in nearly the same category as the various ethnic, religious, and racial terms that we no longer allow as part of a user name. However, perhaps the user should be given some time to respond to the recently posted comment on his talk page before further action is taken. Kat 15:50, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)
He only has 3 stub contributions of a quality consistent with the name. I'm not bothered by his use of the name, but I predict he will just go away. Eclecticology 09:12, 2003 Aug 9 (UTC)
And lo, it came to pass that Eclecticology was proved right by events, and all marvelled at hir mystic powers. Martin 01:08, 14 Sep 2003 (UTC)

[edit] vandalizing talk pages

This user recently deleted my entries on this talk page as part of his effort to insert POV text into the Tarek Fatah article. - Mcasey666 18:30, 8 October 2006 (UTC) I just created an account yesterday and know nothing of what you speak. If the clumsiness of my fingers happened to delete something without my knowledge, I offer my deepest apologies.

[edit] License tagging for Image:Wade 2004.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Wade 2004.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 20:21, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] What's in a Name?

I can see how some might take offense to that which they do not understand. While the initial reaction to a word might be the bristle of an ego, sometimes there is more than meets the eye. The name 'Retard' is actually my great-grandmother's maiden name who was born in France. Due to developing conotation of what the word meant to some, it was actually changed to 'Ratel'. However as the progeny of the 'Retard' clan I hold the name with pride and a twinkle of insight. Those offended might choose to hold their tongue.

[edit] My concern about your username (Retard)

Hello, Retard, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or make you feel unwelcome, but I noticed your username, and am concerned that it might not meet Wikipedia's username policy. After you look over that policy, could we discuss that concern here?

I am concerned that the username you have chosen may not be in keeping with policy. Specifically, I feel that it may not be in keeping with the policy that reads "Usernames mentioning or referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions (e.g. AIDS, amputation, Asperger syndrome, etc.)."

I'd appreciate learning your own views, for instance your reasons for wanting this particular name, and what alternative username you might accept that avoids raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If the two of us can't agree here, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • If you decide to just go ahead and change your username, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under the new username: simply request a new name here following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your username is grossly, blatantly, or obviously inappropriate; such names get reported straight to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism (WP:AIV), or blocked on sight. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus — either here or at WP:RFC/NAME. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! -- Kukini hablame aqui 03:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC) Kukini hablame aqui 03:52, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RFC discussion of your username (Retard)

Hello, Retard, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia! Wikipedia has a policy on what usernames editors can use. Unfortunately, concerns have been raised that your username may be incompatible with that policy. You can contribute to the discussion about it here. Alternatively, if you agree that your username may be problematic and are willing to change it, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under a new name. Simply request a new name here following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account. Thank you. -- Kukini hablame aqui 04:29, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Username blocked

Your username has been blocked indefinitely because it violates our username policy concerning use of usernames referring to illnesses, disabilities, or conditions (see our blocking and username policies for more information).

You are encouraged to create a new account and contribute to Wikipedia under a more appropriate username. Wikipedia:Username provides guidance on selecting an appropriate username. You may also edit Wikipedia without creating an account.

You are not allowed to edit Wikipedia under an inappropriate username. If you would like to discuss the block, you may appeal on your talk page or email the administrator who blocked you. Due to Wikipedia's mechanism for enforcing name changes, your IP address may be temporarily blocked. Unless you have also been engaging in vandalism or impersonation of another user, we will remove that block as soon as possible.

If you want to keep the contributions from your old account for your new username, please follow these directions: (1) Add {{unblock-un|your new username here}} to your user talk page. This is possible because even when you are blocked, you can still edit your own talk page. (2) Soon, an admin may come to unblock you. (3) You will have 24 hours after the unblock to file a request on Wikipedia:Changing username before you may be re-blocked. Note that this can only be done before you create the new one. For more information, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username. In many cases (especially if your account has few or no edits), it is a lot easier to create a new account. — ERcheck (talk) 11:47, 18 March 2007 (UTC)
