[edit] Plot
In the previous episode, Dexter rooted out and dealt with a murderous human trafficker and his complicit wife. After disposing of the bodies in the ocean, Dexter is shocked to find that the Ice Truck Killer has left him a nasty surprise: the corpse of the wife has been plucked from the bottom of the sea and placed back in the trailer where he had dispatched the couple. This, coupled with the fact that a young witness had been found at the crime scene, seems to spell the end for Dexter. He frantically attempts to do away with all evidence of his gruesome hobby, all the while knowing that the boy's description of what he saw would eventually implicate him. As he prepares to toss his blood sample collection into the sea, he notices that a "smiley face" has recently been etched into the sample of the trafficker's wife...
