[edit] Middle Ages and Augustine
Your contribution to the Middle Ages article (Augustine’s birth date and his being “among the last of classically educated men”) did not fit or support the paragraph directly. The paragraph was about the influence of the Christian church in the Middle Ages. It was already a stretch to have Augustine inserted into this paragraph at all by someone else. Adding additional info about him in this place just digressed further from the topic of the paragraph. It may have been useful to include a specific example of how Augustine (or bishop Ambrose) influenced society or government in their day as a way of illustrating the start of the important trend that this paragraph was describing. [edit] Assignment details
Your assignment is to improve (or suggest an improvement on the article's talk page) for any article that is directly related to the Franks or Ostrogoths. The assignment is due next Friday, October 13. You will be graded on the quality of your suggestions for your team. For those of you who do not have copies of the Cantor reading, you may need to complete this assignment after the break. This assignment should not be too hard as Cantor is full of great facts and many of these articles are not very polished. There is also ample opportunity to simply provide references for existing facts using Cantor. This is easily done with footnotes:
- Place a <ref> ... </ref> where you want a footnote reference number to appear in an article—type the text of the note between the ref tags.
- Place the <references/> tag in a "Notes" or "References" section near the end of the article—the list of notes will be generated here.
Here are some basic guidelines to follow for teamwork:
- Team members should each find one or two improvements to recommend and post those recommendations on the article’s talk page.
- When this is completed, team members should post a link to the appropriate article talk page on their teammates’ talk pages.
- Teammates should then each look at each other’s suggestions and comment on which one they think the team should use.
- Once a decision has been made, the suggestion may be left in its final form on the article’s talk page or one of the team members may go ahead and implement the improvement by editing the article itself.
Here is an example of how to leave a link to an article’s talk page where you have made a suggestion for your teammates:
- Please see the suggestion I made for the article on Theodoric. It is under the heading “Assessment addition.”
You should also get in the habit of signing your username by clicking the shortcut button above your editing text box that has a picture of a signature on it. This allows people to easily surf to your talk page and leave you a note. --Jjhake 04:06, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 8:45?
Hi. I'm letting you know that katie told me that she won't get a chance to get on at 4:00, so she and I can do it at 8:45 tonight. Or, you can leave your suggestion now, and we'll see it when we get on. Sorry about that. See you tonight? Spunkiel 20:10, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Theodoric
I already put what I think should be added to the article on Theodoric. I put it on the discussion page under Religion and Roman Influences. Can you give your suggestion and then can we finish up tomorrow night? Spunkiel 01:42, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] homework
ok. so, I already did the contribution thing. It was getting late, so I edited my suggestion, so that is my contribution. I thought about it, and I won't be able to do it later tonight, so I skipped the whole group thing (like suggesting something, and then discussing it), and did it myself. Don't forget that the grade isn't only for the group, you're being graded on your suggestion too, meaning, you and katie both have to come up with something. Sorry... Spunkiel 19:35, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Apostolic Fathers
Probably the best online collection of texts by the Apostolic Fathers is at:
You will also find relevant material at:
http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/
Most texts of the Apostolic Fathers are in volume one of Ante-Nicene Fathers edited by Roberts and Donaldson:
http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf01.toc.html
The Shepherd of Hermas (also called the “Pastor” of Hermas) is in volume two of the ANF:
http://www.ccel.org/ccel/schaff/anf02.ii.i.html
The Second Epistle of Clement and the Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (Didache) are in volume 7:

Notice the indexes at the bottom of these pages. This are very useful tools. You may also search the text electronically with the search box in the page’s left-hand column.--Jjhake 21:58, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Muratorian fragment
Your two contributions to the article on the Muratorian fragment were both good ideas but weak for different reasons. The first contribution stated the difficulty of translating the document do to its faulty Latin an the poor condition of the manuscript. In this contribution, you made three basic errors: 1) You failed to capitalize “Latin.” 2) You created a syntactical error when you replaced “Greek original” with “Greek originaly.” And 3) you cut out the integral phrase “which internal cues identify.” These errors probably biased the other editor against your addition and lead to its deletion.
The information you were trying to add was worth inserting so it is a shame that these errors kept it from being included. It would have been better to simply use a new sentence just after the one that you edited to add the fact that the manuscript’s poor condition and faulty Latin make it difficult to translate. Giving a source would have made it a very strong addition.
Finaly, your comment about the reasons why this fragment should not be used to determine what writings should be included in the Bible was well written and accurately reasoned. However, it was not appropriate to include in an encyclopedia article where only strictly objective facts are of interest. Your addition was not a fact about the Muratorian fragment itself. Rather, you were assessing of the fragment in light of its usefulness to Christians. Even though you did very well in this assessment, it did not belong in an encyclopedia article. Grade: 4/5 --Jjhake 22:07, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Searching apostolic father texts
Okay, to search within a particular text of the apostolic fathers, here is what you need to do.
Go to http://www.ccel.org/search?qu=&category=fulltext and the “Within Books” search tab should be selected already. You can search within any of the three volumes that contain the writings of the apostolic fathers. It will search the entire volume including other writings within that volume, but it will at least be limited to that volume.
So if you are looking for anything from Epistle to Diognetus, First Epistle of Clement to the Corinthians, Polycarp, Ignatius, Barnabas (or Pseudo Barnabas), or Papias, search inside of volume one and look for results that are from the author(s) you are researching. To search inside of volume one for any use of the word “baptism” you can cut and paste the following text.
baptism AND title:(ANF01)
(By the way, ANF01 stands for “Ante-Nicene Fathers, volume 1.”)
To search for anything in the Shepherd (or Pastor) of Hermas, look in volume two:
baptism AND title:( Fathers of the Second Century Hermas)
(A bug in their database does not allow ANF02 to work for this one.)
For anything from The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles (or Didache) or The Second Epistle of Clement, look in volume seven:
baptism AND title:(ANF07)
For any of these you can replace the word “baptism” with any word such as “Moses” or “Eucharist” and it will give you every occurrence of that word in the text, introductions, and footnotes for that volume. Just be sure that you are in the “Within Books” search tab.
Finally, each volume has several indexes at the end of it that you can look through as well. The Scripture reference indexes may be particularly useful. There are also general indexes for all three volumes at the end of volume ten.--Jjhake (talk) 02:41, 26 October 2006 (UTC)
