Talk:Research gimp

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I rolled back the last rewrite because (a) it didn't explain what "gimp" means and (b) went wandering into sado-masochistic territory that seemed way out of place. Let's not get carried away, folks. - DavidWBrooks 13:49, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)

As a 'research gimp' myself, I can vouch for the fact that the term reflects the sado-masochistic meaning of the word 'gimp' - as I explained in my revised entry. Whilst you might not like this definition, it does seem to better capture the term's origin and common usage. Perhaps the word 'gimp' is used differently in the US, but it is not commonly used to mean "deformed person" in the UK where the sado-masochistic meaning of the word is well known. I hope this doesn't say anything about British society ;) - Mic 16:15, 15 Oct 2004 (CET)

Whoops - I did another rewrite without seeing your note here; you'll see my question at the Talk page for your IP. (Why not create an account, by the way? That's a good way to avoid the dreaded IP overlap). It seems that gimp does have different connotations on opposite sides of the pond; perhaps we'd better figure out a way to write that into the ledger, because I think most Americans would find a reference to sado-masochism a bit of a surprise. - DavidWBrooks 14:51, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I think your revision represents a good compromise ;) ...and yes, I probably should create an account. The other IP (with the Talk page) isn't mine, by the way. - Mic 17:15, 15 Oct 2004 (CET)
