Resource consent

A resource consent is the authorisation given to activities as stipulated under the New Zealand Resource Management Act.
There are five types of resource consent:
- land use consent
- subdivision consent
- water permit
- discharge permit
- coastal permit.
Resource consents are granted by the regional councils and territorial authorities.
The activity for which consent is sought needs to ensure that its environmental impacts are no more than minor. Subsequently, the consent is normally issued with a set of conditions that need to be complied with in order to ensure minimal environmental effect. While this principle is commendable, the complexity of issues that surround a consent application (e.g. social, cultural, and ecological considerations.
