Research and Technological Development (RTD) is a phrase used to describe those activities that progress human knowledge and experience in almost any field of activity that uses science and technology.

For example, the European Union has a variety of Frameworks to support such RTD activities. These Frameworks are numbered consecutively. In 2006 the EU research programme was at Framework 6.
