[edit] Statement of the dispute

SNIyer is well known through Wikipedia as a constant POV editor who inserts very emotional and personal statements into articles then removes all other points of view. Has caused edit wars on several different articles.

[edit] Description

When reverted or asked to explain any questionable edits, this user always ignores other users and simply reinserts comments over and over again. Has caused a tremendous edit war on John F. Kennedy which has been going on for several months. When discovered or blocked for violations of the 3 revert rule, will often simple log on as an anon IP user and continue edits as usual. Ignores requests from admins and other users to explain his/her actions -Husnock 06:17, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

He also caused a tremendous edit war on the Death and state funeral of Ronald Reagan and Death and state funeral of Pierre Trudeau articles over the last several months. Since a major Cleanup Taskforce edit was done in early June, he has essentially ignored people (including RickK and others) who have told him that the articles would benefit without all of the trivia he keeps editing. He's added the same couple of phrases ("Canadians/Americans all stopped what they were doing" and detailed descriptions of what anchors said when the news came through of the deaths) over and over again despite consensus that including those statements makes the article narrative, which we aren't going for. --Woohookitty 00:51, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Evidence of disputed behavior

  1. 1SNIyer1 rewrites nearly the entire article of State funeral of John F. Kennedy in POV fashion. When reverted by other users, simply reinserts the comments and proceeds to violate the 3 Revert Rule.
  2. 2 Without cause or reason, removes the statement from JFK article that he was the first 20th century born President to serve in office. Has been doing this for months 3 4 5 6 7
  3. Creates a sock puppet account to avoid the 3 Revert Rule: User:SNIyer12
  4. 8 9 Has rewritten both the Death and state funeral of Pierre Trudeau and the Death and state funeral of Ronald Reagan articles several times. Since a major cleanup effort was done in early June on the Reagan article and early June on the Trudeau article, he has slowly tried to revert all of the changes made. He does it with multiple edits in one day so that it is extremely hard to follow what he is done. He often will add and remove the same information several times in a 24 hour period. It is not in good faith.

[edit] Evidence of trying and failing to resolve the dispute

(provide diffs and links)

  1. Ignores comments and questions about POV to JFK article 1
  2. Ignores comments and questions about POV insertion into September 11 attacks article2
  3. Ignore comments and questions about constant removal of DOB info from JFK article3
  4. Ignores comments about adding and readding the same information over and over. 1, 2. If you read most of the Talk page, you will see what is meant.

[edit] Users certifying the basis for this dispute

  1. --Husnock 17:19, 20 July 2005 (UTC) As the original nominator of this RFC, I certify that the evidence above is the basis for the dispute.
  2. --JimWae 17:03, 2005 July 20 (UTC) (has been going on since user's first entries Sep 2004 on various JFK pages & other). Only as SNIyer12 has user ever used an articles talk page[1][2]. User also deletes other user's entries from his talk page. Has only rarely responded - and then only to a few other editors - mostly from one's who pat him on the back
  3. --Gamaliel 18:53, 20 July 2005 (UTC). This user does not leave edit summaries, does not reply to messages, has only once to my knowledge ever posted a talk page message, does not use article talk pages, does not collaborate in any way with any other editor, continually inserts and reinserts POV commentary about JFK and irrelevant commentary about 9/11 in JFK articles.
  4. --Moncrief 22:52, July 20, 2005 (UTC) This user continually inserts POV phrases into several articles, and refuses to discuss his changes or additions on talk pages, despite repeated requests to do so from other users. Continued reversion wars and refusal to build consensus. Moncrief 22:52, July 20, 2005 (UTC)
Has this RfC been stalled? I want to note that this user now edits under the name SNIyer12. Moncrief 05:30, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
  1. --Woohookitty 23:49, July 24, 2005 (UTC). I definitely certify this. I am new at this, so I have a question. Can I add to the dispute? He has been a bugaboo on the Death and State funeral of Ronald Reagan and Death and state funeral of Pierre Trudeau for months now. He will add and readd the same trivia over and over again despite being told that it's disruptive. I did massive re-write on both as part of the Cleanup Taskforce a couple of months ago and since then, he's been trying to reinsert what I got rid of. I don't have the specific instances where he is done this (I will try to look for them), but he has reinserted the phrase "Canadians stopped what they were doing" or "Americans stopped what they were doing" in regards to the funeral of Reagan/Trudeau many many times. I've reverted each at least 20 times total. --Woohookitty 23:51, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
  2. · Katefan0(scribble) 02:49, July 25, 2005 (UTC) I've been involved with the Death and State funeral of Ronald Reagan article and have witnessed at least a few of these behaviors. He typically does not react immediately to a textual change (nor does he comment on it on talk pages), but rather bides his time and re-inserts deleted information slowly and methodically. I believe these articles are probably like his "pet projects" as he constantly tinkers with them. He also feels, I think, quite a bit of ownership over them [3] · Katefan0(scribble) 02:49, July 25, 2005 (UTC)
  3. Bearcat 10:23, 10 August 2005 (UTC) This is fairly circumstantial evidence, I admit, but SNIyer12 has, in recent days, had a fair bit of topic overlap (see Category:Canadian journalists) with Fat pig 73, who has a very problematic edit history of his own (I've spent entire days -- and more than one, at that -- cleaning up colossal messes Fatpig made of Canadian topics), and a very similar-sounding habit of not acknowledging notes left on his talk page or altering his editing style in response to them. (In fact, every time I've left a note on Fatpig's talk page, he's disappeared for several days, during which time I've invariably found a whole new Fatpig-style mess perpetrated by an anonymous IP. And, for what it's worth, SNIyer12 was making some very Fatpig-style edits to the Canadian journalist articles.) Update: ...and then Fatpig created Category:Lying-in-state in the Canadian House of Commons. Given that this challenge is specifically about SNIyer1's editing on state funerals of former North American leaders, I think my suspicion's been confirmed. See also Canadian notice board.

  1. I have not seen the user personally, but looking at some diffs, s/he seems like a POV editor who breaks the rules mentioned above. Howabout1 Talk to me! 03:30, July 21, 2005 (UTC)
  2. As an outsider, I concur with Howabout1. The diffs speak for themselves, this user does not work well with others, and has no sense of how our policies work, in particular WP:NPOV and Wikipedia:Consensus. The link provided by Katefan0 is especially telling, where s/he "gives permission" for another editor to edit, User_talk:Woohookitty/Archive#Death_and_state_funeral_of_Ronald_Reagan. The constant re-insertion of information that all other editors involved in the articles have objected to is disruptive, and represents a disregard for the spirit of Wikipedia, ie: s/he is editing in bad faith, and is abusing the generosity of our assuming good faith policy. I don't mean to be rude or flippent, but I would like to seriously suggest that SNIyer1 start a blog or LiveJournal page, where consensus and NPOV are not requirements. func(talk) 16:16, 25 July 2005 (UTC)
