[edit] Oleg Alexandrov

Final (56/0/0) ended 03:55 September 25 (UTC)

Oleg Alexandrov (talk contribs) – Oleg Alexandrov has over 14,000 edits since he joined us in December of 2004. Since then, he has been a wonderful contributer, especially in math related articles, and has also participated in many Wikipedia: related discussions. In fact, I first met him when he proposed to trim down the {{welcome}} template. Thus, Oleg Alexandrov is a great Wikipedian deserving to become an administrator. Candidate, please indicate acceptance of the nomination here:

  5. Wholeheartedly. Oleg is an applied mathematics postdoc at UCLA, who has made many excellent contributions to Wikipedia. He has been a tireless contributer to the Mathematics project. He created and has been one of the principle authors of the Manual of Style (mathematics). He was a cofounder of the PlanetMath Exchange project, setting up the original lists of PlanetMath articles for that project (nearly 4000 articles), creating an automated conversion tool, as well as contributing significantly to the content review and merge work of the project. He is a Perl magician and is the creator-owner-operator of Mathbot, the bot who helps to maintain the lists: list of mathematical topics and list of mathematics categories, and in its spare time periodically spellchecks all the math articles on Wikipedia. He will make a great admin. Paul August 16:45, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
For the sake of truth at all costs, I did not write the Manual of Style (mathematics), but rather forked it off from the Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics page, and did some polishing on it. I did not state that clearly when I did my first edit to that style manual, so for better or worse the "creator" of the style manual title will haunt me all my life (or till the Wikipedia servers get wiped off by aliens, whichever comes first). Has in a short time made himself an indispensible member of the WP mathematics effort, and one of the few admin nominations I've looked at where it's clear that the conferring of adminship powers will be put to use (and, naturally in a way that benefits WP). Questions for the candidate
A few generic questions to provide guidance for voters:

1. What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with? (Please read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.)
A. I plan to help with closing AfD discussions. Sometimes there is a big backlog in there. Oleg Alexandrov 16:37, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
A. I originated several articles, but I am most happy with my contributions to level set method which I translated from German, put more content, and added a picture which I think explained what that stuff is all about. The reason I am most happy about it is because I love to find simple explanations for complicated things. :) Oleg Alexandrov 16:37, 18 September 2005 (UTC)
3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
A. I had some arguments over at manifold with MarSch. He made an abstract and formal math article into a more abstract and more formal one. Instead of quietly settling the issue at the talk page, I chose to do some public ranting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mathematics. That did not result in an edit war, and eventually a lot of mathematicians joined in making manifold a much better article, but I wish I were more detached on the matter. Also, in my first month or two I had some arguments with Linas and Andrewa (no edit wars), till I learned how to deal with issues here. That promted me to decline an offer for adminship in April, and ever since I tried to learn to be patient, wait a while for things to cool down, discuss things on talk pages, and try to involve others in the matters.
