[edit] Future Event, date specific, effecting the status of an article

I see the need for a general Future Event template, indicating the specified date, where the status of an article will change - with the facility for a brief description of change (needed); see Talk:Haslev municipality, this is infrequently edited and may not be changed promptly after it becomes redundant. The specified date function could be indexed, so it could alert admins of a article in need of update (although this may create a slew of alerts every January 1st).LessHeard vanU 21:14, 14 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal to create a smoking fetish template

To whom it may concern: I would like to suggest creating a template for the purpose of addressing a subject known officially as capagnolia; more-commonly known and refered to as "smoking fetish". My request is not-only based on personal opinion, but actually rooted in a lifetime of experience. This highly-underated, misunderstood & exclusive (some might say "exquisite") subject today more than ever - considering it`s particular composition & range of unique aspects, esp. a steadily-growing & seemingly never-ending supply of modern-day PC-related subject matter (PC in this case meaning both "politically-correct" AND "personal computer") - I believe more than qualifies it for a discussion template of it`s own origin & useful purpose.

That's not what templates are for. The idea behind a template is that you are going to use it on multiple pages, so you want a standardized form. Templates aren't to include in just one article. Besides, "addressing capagnolia" isn't nearly enough detail to create a template from. -Amarkov babble 20:02, 9 October 2006 (UTC)



[edit] Iceland topics

I thought that a template containing Iceland topics, similar to Template:Portugal topics could be useful. I was planning to add it to newly created Portal:Iceland. I could easily create that template, but I reckon I need approval first. Please provide feedback. By the way, I'm requesting this template because I could not find one of its kind. If a template containing Iceland topics already exists, please let me know. Thank you.--Húsönd 23:45, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

There seems to be no template for Iceland topics (there is no such template that contains a link to Iceland). I'm generally not in favor of such templates, but there are plenty of them so I think there's little chance it would be deleted if you created one. -- Rick Block (talk) 15:44, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Request to rewrite

I was looking through the articles for deletion last night, and I am very concerned that "delete" notices are being pasted on articles which although clearly are in need of much work, are potentially good ideas.

Many of these articles appear from people who have not written before and are unaware of the procedures (or even how to put in titles, categories, etc.) and it clearly isn't a good first action to in effect say: "THIS STUPID ARTICLE AND AUTHOR SHOULD BE DELETED".

To avoid this situation I believe the procedures for deletion should be:

  1. If it meets criteria for speedy deletion - speedy delete.
  2. If the content probably warrants deletion and it is unlikely any article could be written under the title proposed that would be kept, then slap on a deletion notice
(but the comment should be in proportion to the effort/newness of the author')
  1. If the content may warrant deletion but it is possible the title may be good for an article, I proposed a: A Request to rewrite

A Request to rewrite

In essence a request to rewrite is an inoffensive deletion notice!

A request to rewrite would be a notice to the author that unless they substantially improve the article it will be deleted. The request would be time limited, after which if the article has not improved it will "automatically" become a request to delete (if edited) or deleted (if no action has been taken).

My personal opinion is that unless an article meets a criteria for speedy deletion or is posted by a seasoned author, then authors objecting to the deletion should be able to get the deletion notice removed and a "Request for rewrite" put in its place and the deletion notice should make this clear!.

In practice the two are very similar - if the author doesn't put in a substantial to improve the article it will be deleted anyway - but the psychological impact is very different: delete says: "go away you stupid...."; rewrite says: "good try but it will have to go unless..."

In addition the request to rewrite (and deletion notices) should go to a help page which explains:

  1. How to request help ({ { helpme } } -it may sound obvious but it isn't - and when you are new and spending 90% of your time trying to work out how to make bold and have one evening before the deletion date to finish the article ..... trying to find out how to get help is a nightmare!)
  2. How to "deal" with a request to delete.
    1. How to get it removed so that you can see what you are editing
    2. How to use an { { under construction } } notice!
    3. How to get it removed so that those involved have an incentive to work on the article
    4. How to change it into a request to rewrite
    5. How to move to home test-pages (not the kid's sandpit)
    6. A simple explanation of the deletion discussion.
    7. How to speedy delete your own article
  3. A link to some common "templates" for articles by which I mean: User:Haseler/template
  4. How to change the name of an article to make it less "contentious"
  5. How to explain the purpose of an article which is under construction so that the article is considered for its purpose rather than the current state of editing

Greetings! So many of the books, DVDs, etc. have links to Amazon.com as a source of information, I'd like to request a template for Amazon.com external links. Kind of like the {{imdb title}} template, using the item's isbn or title. This would streamline things considerably. Any takers? Cheers, Pegship 16:18, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

Fairly certain we should shy away from Amazon.com links anyway, but here's the template: {{Amazon.com item}}

For books, this is a very bad idea. Books are referenced by ISBN (see Wikipedia:ISBN) in order not to favor any single commercial vendor. John Broughton | Talk 02:55, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
