[edit] Using this page

Use this page to post requests for images that you would like to be used on a Wikipedia article. Others can then upload the image(s). For comments on policies, other users, technology, and other miscellaneous concerns that are not directly related to posting images, use the Wikipedia:Village Pump.

In addition to posting here, consider asking a volunteer photographer directly, using the lists at Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Photographers and Wikipedia:Photo Matching Service.

[edit] Copyright Warning

Wikipedia can accept only photographs and pictures that are licensed compatibly with the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) or are in the public domain. Fair use images are sometimes also acceptable. A complete guideline of what is acceptable can be found at Wikipedia:Image use policy.

  • The simplest way to ensure that is to make them ourselves and explicitly release them under the GFDL by adding {{GFDL}} to the image description page
  • It is also possible to put your own pictures in the public domain by adding '{{PD-release}} to the image page
  • Other copyright options and tags can be found at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags.
  • If you're asking someone else for permission to use their image under the GFDL license, see Request for Permission

[edit] Posting a request

Before posting, please do the following steps:

  • First try to find an image on your own. For tips, see the Wikipedia:Finding images tutorial
  • Avoid blanket requests, as, for example "need pictures for all people in the Lists of people".
  • Request images only for existing articles, i.e. if there is no article, then please write an article first before requesting.
  • Add the request here if you could not find a picture. Select an appropriate subcategory or add a proper category or subcategory in the alphabetical list. Note that there are separate areas below for photographs and graphics/diagrams. Please copy your request in the edit summary so that recent requests can easily be seen on the page history.
  • Link to the article for which you would like to have the picture added, and describe what kind of picture you need. Signing the request is optional.
  • Add only one picture request per bullet.

You may also wish to add an image request template such as {{reqphoto}},{{reqphotoin}}, {{reqmap}}, {{reqdiagram}}, {{reqimageother}}, or {{reqaudio}} for audio files, to the article's talk page. This automatically lists the article in Category:Wikipedia requested images.

If you need someone to take this photo for you, maybe one of them can do it in meta:Press_Corps by location. You might also ask an appropriate photographer or graphic artist. Many are willing to take requests.

[edit] Fulfilling a request

If you want to contribute an image you have taken yourself, either on film or with a digital camera, please make sure it looks optimal. Consider using graphics software such as the GIMP to enhance saturation, contrast, and sharpness (sample tutorial). You do not need to provide a thumbnail image. Please see Wikipedia:Image use policy for more advice on working with images. You can also contribute pictures not taken by you if they are available under a public domain or GFDL license. Other requested images can also be found by viewing Category:Wikipedia requested images, a page with Template:Reqimage, or by viewing Image:No_image_yet, and add images to articles that link to these pages.

  1. Ensure that the picture is properly licensed as shown in the "Copyright Warning" above
  2. Upload the Image. If the license so permits, please upload the image to Wikimedia Commons[1] instead so that all the different Wikipedias can use the image.
  3. Add the proper Image copyright tags and a description to the image description page
  4. Link the image to the corresponding article. Larger images should be linked as thumbnails. For a good tutorial see Wikipedia:Picture tutorial
  5. After you add the requested image, remove the request from this page, and the template from the talk page.
  6. You can also add your contribution to Wikipedia:Fulfilled picture requests or list it at Wikipedia:List of images.

[edit] Fruits

  • Photographs of the flowers and the tree of the durian, and its less common species like Durio dulcis (red durian) and Durio graveolens (red-fleshed durian). --BorgQueen 22:30, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Requesting a picture of a real cantaloupe please. The only current image is that of a musk melon, which is commonly called a cantaloupe in the US, making it impossible to find a picture of a real one using a search online. (The distinction is explained on the talk page) -Goldom (t) (Review) 18:45, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
    • There's this Rock melon by Charles Norton (died 1872). The web site makes a questionable claim to "reproduction rights" (but not copyright). IANAL, so I have no idea if this claim is worth anything. Zeimusu | Talk page 03:24, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Art

  • Emeryville Mudflat art: Need pictures of the Emeryville Mudflat art (no longer existent). These will be old - 1960, 70, 80, early 90's. (This request is intentionally duplicated below in Place in North America.)
  • Origami tech tree - from the article, "This page needs LOTS of pictures, and maybe some animations.". —Josh Lee 02:16, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)
    • I don't have time to do these diagrams in quantity, but I would suggest using Google Sketchup to create the models on which to base the diagrams, to whoever does have the time to do the work. -MalcolmGin 00:05, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
  • Self-parody In my opinion, an artist's parody of his or her own work would be better than a self-portrait in caricature style. JerryFriedman 21:49, 14 October 2005 (UTC)
    • I couldnt really find a good example of an artist parodying their own work exactly, so instead I added an image of Duchamp's Fountain, a parody by an artist of art itself. I hope it's found appropriate.--Pharos 01:34, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
      • [Fountain] was never meant to be a parody or art (read the wikipedia page on it). This does not meet the definition of parody, much less self-parody.
        • I enjoyed seeing the picture there, but maybe it's time for something that's more exactly relevant. —JerryFriedman 18:28, 14 February 2006 (UTC)
  • A photograph of the plaque of Franklin D. Roosevelt by Selma Burke. The original is still in the Recorder of Deeds Building, 515 D Street NW, Washington, D.C. It would make a good addition to the Dime (United States coin) article (as well as the currently nonexistent article on Burke herself).--chris.lawson 16:53, 22 July 2006 (UTC)
  • A picture of benjarong would be nice; the visual description really needs a photo to go along with it. Switchercat talkcont 02:11, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
    • I put a link to a flickr page with it. I mailed the guy for permission. Pending...Joegle 19:37, 23 August 2006 (UTC)
      • Granted and put on the page. Joerite 21:02, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
        • Well, there's nothing there now...
  • We really need an example or two of Richard Diebenkorn paintings!--Knulclunk 05:56, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
  • I would like to find an example of D'Nealian font. Is there anyone who can make one or help me find examples? bibliomaniac15 00:26, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Computers

Important note: When taking photographs of computer exteriors where the screen will be shown, if possible please turn the computer on and show a fairly "default" desktop. Also, place it on a very different color background from the computer case (a shirt or sheet works nicely) so a white background can replace it later, even if you cannot do this yourself. Thanks.

  • Logitech mx and vx revolution mouse
  • A screenshot of the Wikipedia front page on a NeXT computer running WorldWideWeb.
I started in on this, but note that WorldWideWeb does not support graphics or tables so a screenshot is unlikely to be satisfactory. cmh 04:00, 20 July 2006 (UTC)
It might not be satisfactory but it may be informative. Show the warts which it shows. (SEWilco 06:42, 23 December 2006 (UTC))
  • Macs. List of Apple Macintosh models by case type is missing the following:
    • PowerBook 100
    • PowerBook 2400
    • PowerBook G3 Series ("Wallstreet"/"Mainstreet")
    • There's a reward set for the above. Additionally, a better image for the Power Mac G4 "Graphite" would be much appreciated, but there's no reward for them, sorry ;) -- grm_wnr Esc 19:26, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
      • I took this one. I only proposed it in the talk page because it might not be any better. MarshallKe 03:23, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
        • Just realized my mistake: It's not Graphite. Oops. MarshallKe 02:24, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
  • iPods.
    • 2G iPod Shuffle with a colored exterior (not grey)
    • 4G iPod ("Photo") - we don't have any that even show the entire iPod!
    • iPod games on a 5G; something better than Image:242603074 2e1f768324.jpg.
      • Are these two of any use? Any tips on making better ones? --gummAY 10:35, 25 December 2006 (UTC)
        • You might as well upload the first one to the Commons; it might of some us somewhere. What I meant, though, were those that don't come preloaded but instead must be bought off of iTunes. Don't buy any just for this, but If you have any, try taking pictures of those. Also, there is a some degree of barrel distortion; and the clock in the menu bar looks bad, in my opinion.--HereToHelp 21:26, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
    • See [2]. Try to get a composition similar to most of the thumbnails here. Upload to there, and see if anything else is helpful.--HereToHelp 22:23, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Culture

  • Silver Ring Thing: I need a photo of one of the Silver Rings that are integral to this youth movement. There are photos out there on the 'net that I could go grab, but that would be a copyvio. If anyone knows a Silver Ring Thing kid who would be willing to have a photo taken of their ring, I'd greatly appreciate it. Kevyn 23:04, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I Think I've made some headway, but I doubt it is an "officially" sourced ring as is available from some of the referenced sited. I won't pull the request down yet in case someone else can do better, though. Weaponofmassinstruction 20:20, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
  • Gurn. —Josh Lee 03:13, Jun 18, 2005 (UTC)
  • Sicilian School - Need a picture of Frederic II (Holy Roman Emperor) that portrays him with his magna curia, his court. The members of the school were Frederick's notaries. Thanks. --Wikipedius 11:06, 30 July 2005 (UTC)
  • Teddy Boy (youth culture) - there is one picture on the page but maybe one or two more would be helpful.
  • Lomilomi massage needs image of techniques. --Viriditas 04:01, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
  • Rectus abdominis muscle (commonly called a six pack). Actual six-pack, already have a diagram. Would have put it at #Anatmoy, but that's for diagrams. Thanks! Kilo-Lima|(talk) 15:39, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Real feline rectus abdominus muscle added, still need a picture of a real human rectus abdominus. If a see a nice one, I'll add it ;) Verloren Hoop 15:25, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Hair weave
  • Braai
  • Mokume-gane
  • Genkurō, a fox (kitsune) character from the kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura; a special kind of makeup and costuming is used to indicate his magical nature, and images of this would be wonderful. Anything else relating to individual actors, costuming, makeup, are all sorely lacking (as are the articles for them), so if anyone has access to a trove of fair use or PD images of kabuki/bunraku, I'd be most grateful. LordAmeth 16:24, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Predatory lending - image of a payday loan store or pawn shop that says "payday loan" on the window.futurebird 20:44, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
  • For Poverty some images that are more international. The page has too many images from Kuala Lumpur.futurebird 21:36, 7 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Hip hop culture - as the Slovene magazine Mladina recently noted, a picture of a Slovene hip hop dancer is probably not very representative of the subject. Therefore, I kindly request a picture of an American hip hop dancer for the article.
Uploaded one of my own shots of some impromptu "hip hop" breakdancers in San Francisco and included in the article. --shift6 16:32, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Conk -- hair style

The Latin name for mangelwurzel is Beta vulgaris, which is the same thing as ordinary beetroot. There are plenty of pictures of this plant in Wikimedia Commons. Perhaps the beetroot and mangelwurzel articles should be merged together. -- Sakurambo 桜ん坊 16:31, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Argyle diamond mine could really use a photo of a pink diamond (come on, I know you all have a few sitting around waiting to be photographed :) ). A pic of a "champagne"- or "cognac"-colored diamond would also be nice. These pics could be reused at Diamond (a featured article) and elsewhere. Thanks! - Bantman 17:39, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
    • I added a picture of pink diamonds from the GIA website. My company owns plenty of pink diamonds but I don't think I'm allowed to release photographs of them! They are really beautiful. Same with cognac and champagne diamonds. Pictures don't truly do them justice.--Magmagirl 21:31, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
      • I don't know about you releasing photos from your own company, but you're definitely not allowed to use GIA website photos without permission (notice the copyright info at the bottom of the page you used). I left a note at your user page too; I'm afraid the picture needs to be deleted. - Bantman 21:55, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Cleveland Torso Murderer would probably be ready for featured article status - if it had a picture. 3. Her modeling. I am going to venture that the above training center has some pictures of her hanging on the wall of which someone could take photos. In fact, I think I see photos of her hanging on the wall of the copyrighted photo of the inside of the center here! Otherwise, pictures of her modeling could come from scans of ads--or anything, really--and could be used under fair use rationale. Also, Excuse me, are you a model? has photos in it that someone could scan. I'd rather not buy the book...just so I can avoid having to explain to my wife what the heck I am doing with it, LOL. :-)

[edit] Places

A fuller set of requests for photographs of places is sorted by location under Category:Wikipedia requested photographs. Articles can be placed in these subcategories by using {{reqphotoin}} and {{reqphotoin2}} in their talk pages. If more details need to be given or the request is seen as particularly important, the appropriate subcategory page can be edited too. If you have a camera, why not add the subcategory for your local area to your watchlist, and see if anywhere near you gets listed?

See the campus photos already on the UC page for examples of what I mean. --Coolcaesar 09:06, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

Okay, I've updated the list above to remove the ones we have good pictures for now.--Coolcaesar 06:54, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
  • Boilermaker Special
  • There's a business on Broadway, Cambridge MA called "RAS Auto", in which the "A" stands for "auto". A photo of it would be an awesome illustration for the article RAS syndrome. 18.87.0.23 17:06, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Krakatoa - current article has a pre-gigantic-explosion drawing. Contrasting it with a current photo from the same angle/viewpoint would be very educational. Tempshill 22:49, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] U.S. State Capitals

Help out with the wikipedia U.S. State capital pages. We need photos of the city (ie. skyline) and a photo of the capitol building. Below is a list of the state capitals with missing images and what photos are needed. Upload your photos and update the table. (user:Redjar)

Note:A great source is HABS [15]; all the images are PD, and it has lots of government building pictures. I found the Atlanta one there. JesseW 13:02, 16 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The HABS images are PD but they can't guarantee all the images in the collection are PD. [16] (SEWilco 07:36, 23 December 2006 (UTC))

  • Nomad (comics) - Preferably a picture of his original uniform, or one of the character0s main series.
  • Shade (comics) - Needs two pictures, one of his classic Golden Age look, and another one from the last Starman series.
  • Shade, the Changing Man - A picture by Steve Ditko and a modern one from the Vertigo series.
  • Starman (comics) - Could use some small pictures (headshots may be okay in a few cases) of some of the people to use the name, notably Ted Knight, Mikaal Tomas, Gavyn, Will Payton and Jack Knight.
  • Squadron Supreme - Needs an image, preferably the Alex Ross cover for the graphic novel that reprinted the mini-series.
    • All of the aboev are going to be copyrighted. You might as well just take something off of the internet, it will all be the same (poor) copyright status. --Fastfission 18:16, 4 February 2006 (UTC)
  • Captain Marvel - Captain Marvel has a new white costume with a hood, shown on Infinite Crisis #7.
    • Captain Marvel Junior - Shown next to Captain Marvel in Infinite Crisis #7. Captain Marvel Junior apparently has a new red costume.
  • Adam Susan - needs a comic image to go with the movie image.
  • X-Men - Issue 1 image is gone.

  • Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainians and Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Holy Family in Exile - could someone kindly find a picture of the Cathedral of the Holy Family in Exile for these two articles please? Thank you very much Ghfj007 14:26, 16 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Kala (java) - the article mentions a famous statue which would be appropriate
  • Roger Williams (theologian) is missing a picture. I did a search of the Library of Congress' online image archives and of Google images and didn't find a good public domain image. If someone has a photo they've taken of one of the etchings of Williams or some other public-domain picture that would help that artcile out. RainbowCrane 21:24, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Coventry Cathedral is missing a picture of the interior of the old cathedral proir to its destruction. Can anyone find an acceptable picture? There are several out there taken in the early 20th Century but none that seem up-loadable. Thanks.
  • Kebra Nagast needs a picture from an old Ethiopian manuscript (hopefully we can get something a bit better than this).--Pharos 04:06, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Dinosaurs - Wikipedia has plenty of pictures of most familiar genera found in North America or England (Triceratops, Scelidosaurus, Diplodocus, etc). We appear to have few if any photographs of dinosaurs from eastern Asia, South America, Africa, or Australia. A quick photo-visit to a museum on any of these continents would be a huge boon to Wikipedia's 1,300 dinosaur articles. Firsfron of Ronchester 04:34, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
