Requested moves is the place to request article moves that are not straightforward, or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. Normally, logged-in users can do uncontroversial moves themselves using the [move] tab found at the top of every page (see Help:Moving a page). However, sometimes this does not work because the target is already occupied (usually in the form of a redirect with a page history). In other situations a move may be controversial and will require discussion to reach a consensus.

Do not discuss moves on this page. Moves are discussed at the discussion page of the article to be moved.

Discussion to find consensus is encouraged for page moves requested on this page. For more information about appropriate reasons in a contentious page move, see Wikipedia:Naming conventions. Page moves usually take place after five days, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator. The time for discussion may be extended if a consensus has not emerged. Generally speaking, page move requests which have already reached consensus are processed quicker than those which have not.

[edit] What requested moves are not for

Before you begin, please note that requested moves are only for moving articles, and sometimes templates. It is not the place for the following:

Unobstructed, uncontroversial moves
Moves of this nature can be accomplished by any logged-in user whose registration was more than 4 days ago. Use the [move] tab located at the top of every page. See Help:Moving a page.
Category move requests
To rename a category, list it on categories for discussion.
Image move requests
To rename an image, re-upload the image with the name you want, and then change the relevant links to reflect the new name, and then list the old image on images and media for deletion.
Merge requests
To merge two articles, make a request at proposed mergers or be bold and do it yourself.
Cut and paste move fix requests
To request page histories to be merged, list them at cut and paste move repairs.

[edit] Steps for requesting an uncontroversial move

If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial – for example, it is correcting spelling or capitalisation – then update the article's text to reflect the article's new title. For example, by changing the old/incorrect "A Suprise Speach is a...", to "A surprise speech is a...". If the move is uncontroversial and the target name doesn't already exist (or is a simple redirect) you can move it yourself.

Otherwise, post your request in the Uncontroversial proposals section of the page, after reading the instructions for that section.

[edit] Steps for requesting a (possibly) controversial page move

In the following, replace PageName with the name of the page to be moved; NewName with your proposed name; and reason for move with some text explaining your proposal.

Step 1:  Add the request to the list on this page

a.  If there is not already a line with today's date, add it directly under the heading of the Other proposals subsection:
==[[6 April]] [[2007]]==

b.  To enter a request for a single page to be moved to a new name, add the following line at the top of the section under the date line;
{{subst:WP:RM|PageName|NewName|reason for move}}

This will include all the necessary formatting, including your signature. Don't forget the subst: at the beginning!

c.  Include the page's name in your edit summary. Save this page.

Step 2:  Add the move template to talk page

Enter the following text at the very top of the talk page of the page you want moved:
{{move|NewName}}

If you think a page should be moved, but don't yet know what name it should be given, you can use {{moveoptions}} instead to indicate that there are several options to discuss.

Step 3:  Create a place for discussion

If one does not already exist, create a section at the bottom of the talk page of the page you want moved for discussion. This can take any form that is reasonable for administrators to follow. If a formal poll would help clarify whether consensus exists for the move, you can use the following template:
{{subst:WP:RMtalk|PageName|NewName|reason for move}}

The reason for move should be copied from the entry on the WP:RM page. The above template will produce something similar to:

== Requested move ==
PageName → NewName – {reason for move with signature}
=== Survey ===
''Add "* Support" or "* Oppose" or other opinion in the appropriate section followed by a brief explanation, then sign your opinion with <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>

=== Discussion ===
''Add any additional comments

or

== Requested move ==
PageName → NewName – {reason for move with signature}
=== Survey ===
Add "# '''Support'''" or "# '''Oppose'''" on a new line in the appropriate section followed by a brief explanation, then sign your opinion using <nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>. Please remember that this survey is [[Wikipedia:Polling is not a substitute for discussion|not a vote]], and please provide an explanation for your recommendation.

====Survey - in support of the move====

====Survey - in opposition to the move====

=== Discussion ===
Add any additional comments

If you are proposing that multiple closely related pages should all be moved for the same reason (see Multiple page moves), it may be advisable to create this discussion on only a single talk page and provide links from the other talk pages to this centralized discussion.

Please include "move proposal" or similar in the edit summary and don't mark it as minor. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. Save this page.

[edit] Multiple page moves

An example of how to request to move a block of pages:

*[[Talk:Page A]] -- Rationale goes here. --~~~~
**[[Page A]] → [[Page B]]
**[[Page C]] → [[Page D]]
**[[Page E]] → [[Page F]]
  • Talk:Page A -- Rationale goes here. --Foo 23:59, 31 December 1999 (UTC)
    • Page A → Page B
    • Page C → Page D
    • Page E → Page F

Place the {{multimove| NewName | Talk:Page A}} rather than {{move}} template to all affected talk pages (with possible exception of Page A).

[edit] Processing move requests

Requests are generally processed after five days, although a backlog of up to a few days may occasionally develop. Most move requests are processed by a handful of RM regulars who are familiar with naming conventions and precedents and with page moving procedures. When a request is processed, one of several different things may happen.

If the discussion has not arrived at a clear decision to move or not to move, then the move may be relisted in the current day's section. Generally, a note such as "Relisted to allow more time for consensus to develop. ~~~~" is appended at the bottom. Relisting is especially appropriate when discussion in ongoing.

Alternatively, an administrator or other experienced closer may choose to declare a consensus or a lack of consensus. These closures are sometimes controversial, and editors are encouraged to use special caution and attention to detail when closing contested move requests, and to explain their decision in appropriate detail. Factors taken into account in closing controversial requests include Wikipedia policies and guidelines, arguments presented during the discussion, and precedents drawn from other articles.

If the decision is not to move the article, then the move request is closed as a "no consensus". In cases where a formal survey has been set up on the article's talk page, it may be closed with {{polltop}} and {{pollbottom}} templates bracketing the request and discussion; in informal discussions, it is common just to leave a note. If there is a {{move}} template on the talk page (usually at the top), then it is removed, and the listing is removed on the Requested moves page with an appropriate edit summary. If it was the last listing in a date section, then that date section is removed.

If the decision is made to move the article, then the move is carried out. Editors moving pages are requested to check that all double redirects are repaired (these may point to the article or to the talk page) and that any disambiguation hatnotes at the top of the page are adjusted if necessary. Unobstructed moves may be carried out by any editor, while moves requiring deletion and/or history repair must be performed by an administrator (or with help from an administrator via the {{db-move}} template).

Once a page has been moved, the request may be closed accordingly, and delisted as above.

[edit] Relevant policies and guidelines

In discussing a page move, or making a move request, please consider the following Wikipedia policies and guidelines:

[edit] See also

  • Template:Db-move, Use this template for requesting a speedy deletion for the reason of "making room for a page move that is uncontroversial or consensual, for instance reversing a redirect, or removing a disambig page that only points to a single article (CSD G6)."

[edit] Uncontroversial proposals

Only list here proposals that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete. Things like capitalization and spelling mistakes would be appropriate here. If there is any prior discussion as to the name of the article please link to it. If there is any possibility that the proposed page move could be opposed by anyone, do not list it in this section. If the move location appears as a red link you should be able to move the article using the move button of the top of the article's page (unless your account is less than 4 days old) and don't need to use this page.

Please list new requests at the bottom and use {{subst:WP:RM2|Old page name|Requested name|Reason for move}}; do not copy, paste, and edit previous entries. No dated sections are necessary, and no templates on the article's talk page are necessary. Do not sign yourself — the template will do it for you.

If your request was not fulfilled, and was removed from this section, please relist it in the #Other proposals section below.

  • Chabad-LubavitchChabad. Per naming guidelines. Chabad is the most common by far, we always use the most commonly used name, see talk. Furthermore, it is not clear what the official name of organisation, since it is fragmented and there is no evidence that Chabad-Lubavitch is the official name anyway. What is more, even if it was the official name , we still wouldn't use it, per above. I did a survey and found that Chabad was the most common name, and Chabad-Lubavitch was much less so. • WQLR (AM)WQLR —(Discuss)— WQLR is the official callsign of the station, and the disambig currently consists only of the current WQLR and the former WQLR -- this can be accomplised by the use of the For template at the top of the main article. —JPG-GR 03:15, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Please move Talk:The Master Musicians of Joujouka to Talk:Master Musicians of Joujouka. The talk pages redirect in the opposite direction of the articles. BNutzer 06:55, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Was malformed below, but isn't controversial. Dekimasuよ! 04:17, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Incomplete and contested proposals

If a requested move is incomplete (not all steps of the procedure are followed), or if anyone objects to an "uncontroversial" proposal, it should be listed here until the proposer or anyone else completes it. After the completion, please move the entry to the top of "other proposals" section. Please place newly moved requests to the top of this list, and either sign (~~~~) or just put the timestamp (~~~~~) at the end. Proposals that remain here longer than 5 days are subject to removal.

Comment: Disambiguation might be appropriate for Joe Morgan (manager) and Joe Morgan.--orlady 16:19, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
Clearly a contested rename. I'd suggest simply withdrawing the nomination. Several months ago an editor changed the dab page to a redirect. I reverted back to the dab change and added a few more from a quick search. The name is quite common and many of these are notable enough for an article. Vegaswikian 23:14, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Moved to contested. --Stemonitis 14:54, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Tigrinya languageTigrinya — Nothing to disambiguate from. Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (languages). —Peter Isotalo 11:29, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
    • WP:Lang advocates always including the word "language". Moved from uncontroversial. --Stemonitis 11:35, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
      • I don't know whether the Tigray-Tigrinya group is enough to motivate disambiguation, but try a little harder to read guidelines in their entirety. The WikiProject recommendation clearly points out the following:
        Please note that when there is nothing to disambiguate a language name from, such as Hindi, Esperanto or Inuktitut, there is no need for the "language".
      Peter Isotalo 11:57, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Although there is no article called Tigrinya people, the Tigray-Tigrinya people can be referred to as "the Tigrinya" (and sometimes are, on that page). It seems like that means there is something to disambiguate from. Dekimasuよ! 11:49, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Is there a reason that they're referred to as "Tigray-Tigrinya", and not just the second pard? If they are only occasionally referred to as "the Tigrinya", it should be solved by a dablink from the language article. Peter Isotalo 11:57, 4 April 2007 (UTC)
      • After looking through the links themselves in more detail, I think a dablink tag should be sufficient. Dekimasuよ! 07:06, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Ahmed Kamal → Ahmed Kamal (cricketer) — The page of Ahmed Kamal should be used as a disambiguation page. I.e., Ahmed Kamal is also an Egyptologist. Refer to

de:Ahmed KamalRolandUnger 11:56, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

  • That doesn't make sense until the second article exists, and neither is deemed to be the primary meaning of "Ahmed Kamal". --Stemonitis 12:00, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • I have created the article Ahmed Kamal (Egyptologist) now. --RolandUnger 12:39, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Ahmed Kamal, the cricketer, still appears to be more prominent than the Egyptologist. We needn't follow the example of the German Wikipedia, particularly since cricket is more popular in English-speaking areas than the German Sprachraum. --Stemonitis 17:31, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
  • GFS Marketplace 4003M Performance 400 — In a complex juggling of naming rights, the first race of the year at this track, formerly known as the 3M Performance 400, was renamed the Citizens Bank 400. But, the second race of the year, previously the GFS Marketplace 400, was renamed the 3M Performance 400. To keep the race histories straight, the page should be moved as noted, but since there used to be a previous 3M Performance 400, I can't do it. Thanks. —Airline 01:43, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

  • SatchitanandaSatchidananda -The correct spellings are SatchiDananda. The sanskrit root words are sat+chit+ananda, but according to the rules of alphabetic merger ("sandhi") the chit+ananda becomes chidananda Bunty.Gill 05:29, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Moved from below. The proposal was incomplete, and the page itself tends to use a different spelling from either of these two. Dekimasuよ! 07:21, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Sprinkler headFire sprinkler - (Discuss) — The new name is industry accepted practice. I tried to do the Move myself, but it did not work, as I believe there are conflicts with the name of the article Fire sprinkler system Fireproeng 23:12, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
    • I suggest that Fire sprinkler should become a dab page. Moved from uncontroversial. DES (talk) 19:24, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Chonji LakeChonji — Someone just moved without discussion, apparently unaware of the earlier discussion and consensus on talk page —BAmonster 06:41, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
    • Oppose This is not uncontroversial. It was originally titled Tianchi and moved without consensus. We should move it back to the most common name which is Tianchi. LionheartX 06:58, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Moved from uncontroversial. --Stemonitis 09:04, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • This is due to be removed, but really needs some administrator eyes. Now the article is at Cheonji lake (though the talk page isn't) and there is no apparent consensus for any of these names. Suggest unifying the two, putting move protection in place, and starting a correctly-formed discussion from that starting point. Dekimasuよ! 06:12, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Other proposals

All of the proposals listed below need to have a discussion set up on talk page of the article to be moved. Please use the template {{subst:WP:RM|Old Page Name|Requested name|Reason for move}} and, if necessary, create a new dated section.

Warning Please use the correct template: see the instructions above. Do NOT attempt to copy and paste formatting from another listing.

Golmud is used name in English. Consistency with the main article Golmud.
  • Cinematic genreFilm genre —(Discuss)— The academic term is 'film genre". Also the category is "category:film genre." In addition the common usage term is "film genre." Google has 574,000 hits for "film genre" and 27,000 hits for "cinematic genre." I have a degree from U.S.C. school of cinema and I promise this is the right term. —Cott12 Talk 13:21, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

A Google search for "Messier 7 -Wikipedia" versus "Ptolemy Cluster -Wikipedia" demonstrates that Messier 7 is much more frequently used. —Dr. Submillimeter 11:38, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Eisack-IsarcoEisack —(Discuss)— Eisack is the German name, Isarco the Italian name. This is a river in northern Italy with a largely German speaking population on its banks. The name of the article should be in one language, not two. —Markussep 18:32, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Đ → D with stroke (disambiguation) —(Discuss)— The character Đ (U+0110) is the specific capital for D with stroke. The other characters redirect to the appropriate pages -- Ð (U+00D0) redirects to Eth, Ɖ (U+0189) redirects to African D -- but Đ (U+0110) is a disambiguation page. I propose that the disambiguation page be moved elsewhere and Đ (U+0110) be made into a redirect to D with stroke. —Ptcamn 16:15, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Planck's law of black body radiationPlanck's law —(Discuss)— First, most textbooks do not use "Planck's law of blackbody radiation" to identify the law. Several shorter variants ("Planck's law", "Planck's radiation formula", etc.) are generally used. "Planck's law" itself is used by the Rybicki and Lightman reference in this article. Second, this is the only law (or at least the most well-known law) named after Max Planck. Planck's law itself is currently a redirect to this article. This article simply does not need such a lengthy name. —Dr. Submillimeter 09:22, 2 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Road safety camera → Vehicle detection camera —(Discuss)— Concerns have been expressed that 'Road safety camera' fails NPOV. The initial suggestion was 'Road rule enforcement camera' but that, whilst NPOV, is illogical since the cameras detect but do not enforce (that is the authorities' job) and there is no such legal provision as a road rule (there are laws and regulations but not rules). Consequently, I am proposing the new title that seems both NPOV and accurate. I am neutral since I am quite happy with the existing title since though, arguably, it is not NPOV, it is the official name in several jurisdictions, and seems fine to me. I invite comments .... —BlueValour 22:08, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • List of firsts → List of first people —(Discuss)— The current title is too vague. It could be a list about natural, animals, or ficitonal firsts. My suggested title is only a little better, so I would encourage other suggestions. —Cigarette 19:55, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Sioux UprisingDakota War of 1862 —(Discuss)— Current title is misleading--most academic institutes (including the Minnesota Historical Society[2]) now refer to it as something other than the Sioux Uprising, preferring a more neutral title. Good suggestions/reasons-why to move the page have been discussed for years now, and generally agreed upon. —oncamera(t) 06:10, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Inírida (town and municipality) Inírida, GuainíaInirida —(Discuss)— The name of the city has officially been changed to Inirida, dropping the Puerto (Port) and the accent above the first i, the old name is still popularly used, but it is not official anymore and to stay clear and objective it should be changed to the new name, the page Inirida, however is a redirect page that directs to a disamibguation page —mijotoba 04:39, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
Also another user recently changed it to have the "(town and municipality)" when its not needed since there is no other Inirida is wikipedia, and Inirida is not a town is a city, and in Colombia, municipalities and cities are the same, so its redundant.mijotoba 18:36, 2 April 2007 (UTC)
  • List of American wars → List of wars involving the United States —(Discuss)— The old name is not very clear; what exactly does "list of American wars" mean? List of wars fought on "American" soil, list of wars involving the American people, list of wars involving people from the Americas? The new name is much more precise. —-- Cielomobile talk / contribs 01:06, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

  • Talk:Jin-Soo Kwon (Discuss) — Per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Korean)#Name order, standard order for Korean given names is family name first, "unless the subject is known to prefer otherwise." Although (as noted by Jtrost on the Jin-Soo Kwon talk page), the show's official ABC Web site gives the names as Jin-Soo Kwon and Sun Kwon, that isn't quite the same as "the subject preferring otherwise." If you asked the characters themselves, I'm pretty sure they would give their names as Kwon Jin-Soo and Kwon Sun-Hwa. Also, as DocNox points out, "all the character article titles aren't following exactly the way they're listed on ABC." I think the article titles should follow standard Korean name order, as recommended by Wikipedia naming conventions. —Dodiad 23:11, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Infamous cases of child murder after 1900? —(Discuss)— Name is far too subjective for a Wikipedia article. Also "Infamous" is defined as "shameful, bad in reputation", which applies to all cases of child murder. It could be changed to Notable cases of child murder after 1900, but that's still not ideal. If anyone has any better suggestions. There are also problems with the list itself, is it trying to list every case since 1900, or just ones people remember? And who decides? —Masaruemoto 17:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
