Wikipedia:Request an account/Administrators
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Instructions to create an account for anonymous users:
- Log in, if you haven't already. It's important to create these accounts while logged in, so that should an error occur that might require bureaucrat help, a bureaucrat can confirm that you created the account, and act accordingly.
- Look through each request made since the list was last cleared. Look through the diffs individually, since requests may overwrite other existing requests. Also check before handling requests whether any users mistyped their e-mail address and corrected it in a later request, to ensure that the correct e-mail address is used.
- Click the "create" link next to the desired username or click this link
- Click "by e-mail". If that button does not appear, then please make sure that you are logged in
- If successful, move the request to Wikipedia:Request an account/April 2007, and remove the user's e-mail address and the section from the main page. If unsuccessful, see "possible errors" below.
- (optional) Welcome the user with a Welcome template.
[edit] Possible errors
Problem | Solution | |
---|---|---|
Errors made by the requester | No username is provided | E-mail the user and ask them which username they would like to use |
No e-mail address is provided, or e-mails sent to their address bounce | If you can guess what the correct spelling of the e-mail should be (e.g. example@hotmailco.uk should be example@hotmail.co.uk) then send any e-mails you sent to that address instead. Otherwise, contact the requester on their talk page, requesting them to provide their e-mail address in a follow-up request | |
No username and no e-mail address is provided |
|
|
The user entered their password, or the password they wish to use | Handle the request in the normal way, and send an e-mail to the user telling them to change their password. Follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requests for oversight to request the removal of any revisions containing the user's password. | |
Account errors | Account already exists | E-mail the requester and let them know that the account already exists, and ask that they come up with another username. A boilerplate e-mail can be found here. |
The account name is too similar to an existing account |
|
|
Account violates the username policy | E-mail the requester, and request that they provide an alternative username | |
You are unsure whether the account name is acceptable | Add a signed comment to the request detailing your uncertainty, in order to get a second opinion. | |
Errors made by users handling requests | You entered the incorrect username | Fill the form out again, with the correct username |
You entered the incorrect e-mail address |
|
|
You clicked "create account", not "by e-mail" when creating the account | Go to Special:Userlogin, type in the username and click the "E-mail new password" button. |
