Interesting page. I'd never heard this term, though something of the same phenomenon is noticeable in the US with cars that turn up in large numbers in the rental company fleets, such as the Ford Taurus.

Also it's interesting that hatchbacks seem not to be much esteemed in the UK. US car magazines frequently tsk-tsk over the fact that larger hatchbacks, like the Merkur Scorpio, have flopped here, and like to intimate that European buyers are much more sensible. Seems it ain't necessarily so. RivGuySC 01:42, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)

It's weird here in Ireland - it seems hatchbacks (especially the "liftback" type like those of Ford Mondeos and Opel Astras) are very unpopular here compared to in the UK. I've heard journalists being quite frightened at the amount of things like Nissan Almera and Toyota Corolla saloons seen over here. Compare this to the UK where the majority of these are hatchbacks - the Corolla is especially noteworthy of this, as with the previous model there was actually a 5-door liftback made specially in the UK (all the other European Corollas at the time were made in Japan), and was very uncommon here.

I don't know why it's like this. Especially taking into account that saloon versions of many cars (most notably the latest Corolla, Civic and Focus) look significantly worse than the hatches and estates... --Zilog Jones 03:33, 29 May 2005 (UTC)
