Other Autobots give the fittingly-named Repgunus a wide berth – visually unpleasant to look at, his temperament is even worse. He’s foul-mouthed, foul-tempered, vicious, anti-social and insubordinate, and has actually been kicked out of the Autobot several times, only to be invited back when his superiors have a mission that’s simply too filthy for any other Autobot to carry out. Repugnus is the kind of soldier who is a necessary evil in war, but is left an embittered loner among the Autobots. When he’s not ferreting out information on undercover missions in the Decepticon camp, Repugnus will spread malicious, morale-dampening gossip about his “comrades.” Repugnus is armed with a paralyzing venom laser, but puts little faith in it or any gun – his insectoid creature mode’s claws can rip through almost any material, and his x-ray and infrared vision is supplemented with the ability to project stroboscopic optical effects that dazzle and disorient his foes.

[edit] Transformers: Headmasters

Although the Monsterbots didn't appear in the US Transformers series, they did appear in a few episode of the Japanese Headmasters television series.

[edit] Marvel Comics

Repugnus and the Monsterbots were among the Autobots who joined Fortress Maximus in leaving Cybertron for the planet Nebulos (Transformers: Headmasters #1).

Followed to Nebulos by the Decepticons under Scorponok, Fortress Maximus' band left Nebulos for the planet Earth (Transformers: Headmasters #4).

Repugnus was present when Grimlock fought Blaster for leadership of the Autobots on Earth's moon. The Autobots were then attacked by the Decepticons lead by Ratbat (Transformers #41).

[edit] Dreamwave Productions

Although Repugnus didn't appear in any Dreamwave storyline, he did get a full page biography in the More Than Meets The Eye comic.

It has become commonplace in more modern Transformers toylines for certain figures to be designed as homages to characters from past series, or for existing toys to be repainted for this purpose also. Given their lesser-known nature, for any of the Monsterbots to be chosen for this was surprising, but Repugnus has twice received the honor – his first homage was in the parallel-universe spanning Transformers: Universe line in 2006, as a red and yellow repaint of the Beast Wars Fuzor, Buzzclaw (packaged with Overbite). Although the box seems to present Repugnus as a Decepticon, the toy has an Autobot symbol on it - although certainly the result of an error, it is a pleasant coincidence as mistakes go, given the original Repugnus's function as an undercover agent.

Repugnus's only appearance in the Transformers: Universe storyline was a single appearance in a flashback in the Transformers: Cybertron comic series, where it was shown he was present at the final battle with Unicron.

It should be noted that Generation One Repugnus and the other Monsterbots has a cameo in the unreleased issued 4 of the Transformers: Universe - Wreckers comic. They appeared at a bar in space where Devcon and the Dinobots met.

[edit] Transformers: Cybertron

Repugnus received his second homage when his name and red-and-yellow color scheme were used again in Transformers: Cybertron as a repaint of - and brother to - that line’s Undermine. Repugnus transforms into a transmetal spinosaur, and rules a small kingdom in the fetid swamps found at the base of the Steel Shard Mountains on the Jungle Planet. These swamps are among the few places not under the control of the planet's ruler, Scourge, and Repugnus protects the freedom of his stinking, slime-dwelling subjects fiercely; his intimate knowledge of the swamps allows him to isolate and destroy invaders easily in its murky confines. So dedicated is he to maintaining the freedom of his kingdom that he even exiled Undermine, his own brother, for being in league with Scourge.

There seems to be some confusion as to whether Repugnus is an Autobot or Decepticon. The toy is sold as an Autobot, but on the Hasbro Web site he is listed as a Decepticon.

Tech Spec: Among the very few places on the Jungle Planet not firmly under the control of SCOURGE are the fetid swamps in the valleys at the foot of the Steel Shard Mountains. Here, REPUGNUS rules. He and his subjects rejoice in the stinking slime of which they make their homes. He protects their freedom fiercely, using his intimate knowledge of the swamps to isolate and destroy any invaders, often without ever being seen by his targets. So dedicated is he to the freedom of his people that he even exiled his own brother – UNDERMINE -- for being in league with SCOURGE.

Cyber Code Info: As with some of the other Transformers in the Cybertron toy line, this character shares it’s name and color scheme with a character from the original 1987 Generation 1 Transformers toy line. In his original incarnation, he was what was referred to as a “Monsterbot” and he was a huge, bug-like creature. Also, in his original form, Repugnus was an Autobot!
