Republican Left

The Republican Left (La Sinistra Repubblica) was an Italian political party founded on January 30, 1994 after theItalian Republican Party split. After that 22 January 1994 Giorgio Malfa had newly assumed the secretariat of the PRI, replacing Giorgio Bogi (until that moment secretary), National Council of the party decided to leave Alleanza Democratica - in which the PRI was found - and to enter the coalition Pact for Italy. Therefore Giorgio Bogi, Giuseppe Ayala and Libero Gualtieri left PRI as a reaction, giving birth to a small movement the Republican Left, than one component of Alleanza Democratica.

On February 13, 1998 the Republican Left joined (together with Federazione Laburista, Movement of the Unitary Communists, Social Christians, the Reformers for Europe and Agire Solidali) in the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS), thus founding the Democrats of the Left (DS). Currently, Sinistra Repubblicana remains a centre-left faction within DS.
