Republic of Mountainous Armenia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Republic of Mountainous Armenia (also known as the Republic of Karabakh-Zanghezur) was a short-lived and unrecognized state in the South Caucasus, roughly corresponding with the territory that is now the present-day Armenian province of Syunik and the unrecognized republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. It was proclaimed by Armenian General Andranik Toros Ozanian in protest of the Treaty of Batum, an agreement which would have given Turkey a considerable portion of the South Caucasus and would have left Armenia as a small enclave centered around the western shores of Lake Sevan and the cities of Yerevan and Echmiadzin.
