[edit] Plot synopsis
[edit] Summary
While Lilah, Lindsey and the other lawyers at Wolfram & Hart ritually prepare for the firm’s impending 75-Year Review, Angel learns from various sources, including Lorne, that the historically deadly event involves a visit from one of the Senior Partners (who manifests as a big, bad Kleynach demon). The demon wears a ring with the power to transport Angel to the firm’s Home Office, where he plans to kill all the Senior Partners. To take the ring, Angel needs a one-of-a-kind magic glove that would allow him to strangle the Kleynach without being incinerated in turn, but a revenge-seeking Darla intercepts the glove and leaves Angel wounded. Meanwhile, Kate’s life falls completely apart when she is fired from the police force after an Internal Affairs investigation. Also, business slows down for Cordelia, Wesley and Gunn’s new agency, putting them at some distance from one another, both literally and emotionally.
[edit] Expanded overview
Angel arrives at an apartment building and finds one of the rooms filled with goats. Two men are performing a sacrificial ritual and Angel demands information on the ritual and their bosses, Wolfram and Hart. He then destroys the materials in the room, preventing the ritual from taking place. The Angel Investigations team completes the removal of the third eye from a young girl, Stephanie Sharp, but Mrs. Sharp refuses to pay. Gunn returns to his old neighborhood while events at the office are slow.
Wolfram and Hart's 75-Year Review is coming soon and everyone is in mortal fear. Lindsey calms Lilah, telling her they can't do anything to save their lives during the Review. Angel asks for Kate's help but, under investigation for her suspect involvement with odd cases, she bitterly refuses, showing him crime scene photos from Holland Manners' wine cellar to illustrate her belief that Angel is to blame. Lindsey returns to his home and finds Darla waiting for him as he expected. They talk about how Lindsey rescued her from the sewers after Angel's attack and about Drusilla's departure. He gives her a container of human blood then goes to shower. Darla stops feigning weakness and searches Lindsey's briefcase while he is out of the room.
Lorne reveals to Angel that a Senior Partner of Wolfram and Hart is coming to earth for the Review. "Home Office" and "Band of Blacknil" are two bits of information he picked up through his mind reading. Angel shows up at the office of his former employees, needing one of the books that they took when they left. Cordelia refuses to let him take it, and Angel grows cold and deadly. Wesley rises from his wheelchair and tells Cordy to let Angel have the book so he can remove himself from the premises forthwith. Cordelia vents about Angel until Wesley catches her attention: stitches from his healing gunshot wound have torn in the confrontation.
Kate faces a review board that dredges up every detail of her career, then unceremoniously fires her. Angel returns to the bookstore he visited fifty years ago in search of information on the Senior Partner. A decades-older Denver tells Angel that it will take the form of a Kleynach demon and a glove will be needed to remove the demon's ring, the Band of Blacknil, that allows passage to Hell. Denver gets the glove from the back room, but before he can give it to Angel, Darla stabs him with a sword, impaling Angel with the same stroke. Darla takes the glove, leaving Angel alive.
Virginia talks with Wesley about how much danger he's always in. With heartbreaking insight, Wesley acknowledges how difficult it must for her--to break up with him. Kate returns home and deals with being fired in self-destructive ways. Angel grabs Lilah as she arrives for the Review and uses her to gain entrance to the building. Wesley and Cordelia talk on the phone, both depressed about their lives and lack of work. Cordelia gets a call from Mrs. Sharp offering to pay for the Angel Investigations services they previously refused. A demon is with Mrs. Sharp and kills her after she says that Cordelia is on her way.
Angel enters the room where the Senior Partner is to be called forth from a pentagram rendered in flashy graphic style. Angel spots Darla in the crowd and the two fight while the Kleynach demon materializes. Security guards attack Darla after Angel rips off her disguise and exposes her as a vampire by dousing her with holy water. In the confusion, Angel gets the glove away from Darla, dons it and flies at the demon's throat. The Senior Partner implodes, but the force of Angel's leap carries him crashing out the 15th story window. Still holding the demon's empty robe in his gloved fist when he hits the ground, Angel takes a moment to recover his wind. The ring falls nearby. Angel puts the ring on and elevator doors mysteriously open in the foundation of the Wolfram and Hart building. A dead Holland offers Angel a one-way trip down to the "Home Office." Angel accepts the challenge. They talk about Holland's status, Angel's purpose and the nature of evil in the world. After passing through nether realms of darkness and fire, the elevator comes to a stop and its doors open--right back where they started. The "Home Office" is Earth.
Angel returns to the hotel and hangs up on a message from Kate, drunk and overdosing on pills, blaming him for her problems. Angel finds Darla waiting for him and, realizing that he wants to feel something, anything, Angel kisses her seductively. At first, she pushes him away but he takes her roughly and soon the two are lost in each other. Later, as a storm crashes outside, Angel wakes with a gasp.

The Wolfram and Hart exterior is a bank building in downtown Los Angeles. The scene of Angel jumping through the window and landing on the ground involved a live stuntman taking a fall from the bank building.

[edit] Quotes and trivia
In this episode, the glove is the only way to kill the Kleynach. When Angel drops the glove, leaving it in Holland's possession, the Kleynach demons become essentially invincible unless Wolfram and Hart says otherwise, establishing themselves as one of the few invulnerable races on Angel or Buffy.
[edit] Translations

- Italian title: "Un viaggio di sola andata" ("A one-way journey")
[edit] Continuity
[edit] Arc significance
This is the first and only time that one of the Senior Partners is seen, and it is killed several seconds after arriving in this dimension.
This episode marks the peak of Angel's mental journey before his epiphany in the next episode. He is prepared to die as he enters the elevator, believing he is going to face the Senior Partners, despite the fact that he is unarmed and is already weakened from his stomach wound and fall.
