The Renegades is a fictional organization from the role playing game, Tales of Symphonia, by Namco.

[edit] Renegades

The Renegades are an organization created to oppose Cruxis and the Desians. They are led by Yuan, one of Mithos Yggdrasill's companions from the Great Kharlan War, and also one of the Four Seraphim of Cruxis. After hearing his older sister Martel's last words - that she wanted a world without discrimination - Mithos decided that the only way to fulfil her wish was to make everyone the same by turning them into lifeless beings. The hero transformed his friends, Kratos Aurion and Yuan, into angel-like entities along with himself. He then formed Cruxis and the Desians. Yuan secretly set up the Renegades to thwart Mithos's plans in contrast to Kratos, who openly rebelled and left the group. Eventually, Kratos was caught and forced to rejoin Cruxis while Yuan managed to keep his true identity unknown for many years. The game never explicitly states how long the Renegades have existed. The Renegades are very similar in appearance to Desians, and are mistaken for the latter several times in the game.

The Renegades have two bases of operation, one in the Triet Desert in Sylvarant and another in the arctic north-east region of Tethe'alla. Both facilities use electrical power in order to power up their machinery.

[edit] In-game Appearances

On the Day of Prophecy, when the Chosen is to receive an oracle from heaven, the Martel Temple near the village of Iselia is attacked. Lloyd, Colette and Genis arrive to find Botta, Yuan's right-hand man, waiting to kill the Chosen. At once, they are mistaken for Desians and are accused of breaking Iselia's non-aggression treaty with the local Human Ranch. The Renegade troops attack the three and almost succeed in killing them until Kratos appears and drives them off.

The second time the party meets with the Renegades is when Lloyd is captured and taken to their base in the desert. He escapes, but is seen by some guards and runs into a nearby room to avoid them. Here, he meets Yuan, who attempts to strike him before realising who he is. The following conversation (or rather, exchange of insults) between the two is cut short when Botta rushes in, saying that the Chosen's group had broken into the base. Yuan remarks that their plans would be ruined if he was seen and escapes. Just as Botta is about to finish Lloyd, his friends find him. The Renegades attack the group but again are defeated.

Botta retreats and the party is reunited. The Renegades do not reappear in person for a while. However, once the group have infiltrated the Asgard Desian Human Ranch, they meet up with the Renegades again. This time though, Botta speaks to Kratos as if they knew each other and agrees that it would be in both their interests not to fight at the moment. Puzzled, the rest of the group's suspicions are cut short when the Desian Grand Cardinal, Kvar, enters the room and attacks. Lloyd's party escapes, as do the Renegades. After this scene, Kvar orders his soldiers to continue searching for "the Renegade, Botta". This is one of the first clues that the so-called Desians may not be all they seem.

At the end of the Chosen's world regeneration journey, the group are staying at an inn in Hima. Early in the morning, Kratos sneaks outside to speak to Lloyd's dog-like pet, Noishe. Lloyd follows him and shouts out as a cloaked figure appears and attacks Kratos. Fortunately, Kratos manages to wound the man and drive him off; it is unclear whether Kratos recognized his attacker. Once everyone else is awake, the party sets off for what they believe to be their final destination: the Tower of Salvation.

Inside the tower, Cruxis's plans are revealed and Kratos betrays the group, revealing himself to be a Cruxis Seraphim. As Yggdrasill is ready to deliver the final blow, Botta and his men save the group and carry them off to safety. Back at the Triet base, once Lloyd and the others wake up, Yuan and Botta explain who they are and the truth about Cruxis. After this, they attempt to capture Lloyd again but fail. The group escapes from the base by stealing some Rheairds, small jetbike-like aircraft.

In Tethe'alla, when the party travels to the Fooji Mountains to retrieve the Rheairds (which had previously crashed there a short while before), they are caught in a trap laid by Yuan. The Renegade leader himself appears and orders his men to take the vehicles back. But before he can make a move for Lloyd, the Desian Grand Cardinal, Pronyma, arrives to kidnap the Chosen. Oddly, she addresses Yuan as "Lord", despite the fact that they are meant to be enemies. The two strike a deal with each other; Yuan would get Lloyd and Pronyma would have Colette. However, Colette's Key Crest is activated in the process and she trips onto the mechanism controlling the trap, breaking it. The group fight off Pronyma and Lloyd charges at Yuan. His swords are then deflected by Kratos, who has come to tell Yuan that Yggdrasill has called for him. The Renegade then reveals his wings, showing that he is an angel, and flies away. This is yet more evidence contradicting the Renegades' anti-Cruxis stance.

The party meets the Renegades again when they infiltrate the Tethe'alla Base to steal back the Rheairds. Once inside the base's hangar, Yuan and Botta arrive to fight them. Though defeated, the two are not killed, and are ready for more until a sudden earthquake shakes the building. Lloyd's group use this chance to escape with the Rheairds, but Yuan is not bothered, saying that their "little friend" could tell them where they were at any time. (This "little friend" later turns out to be none other than Zelos Wilder, who was spying for both Cruxis and the Renegades while trying to decide what side was the strongest.)

After the group return to Sylvarant, they hear rumours of Desians wandering around inside the ruins of the Palmacosta Human Ranch. They get there to find Yuan and Botta again, who tell them more of the story behind the splitting of the two worlds. The party learns about the existence of the Great Kharlan Seed and agree to help the Renegades make it germinate. Yuan also explains that he is a double agent, an angel of Cruxis and also the leader of the Renegades.

In order to restore the Great Seed, it must be exposed to a large amount of mana. The only possible way to do this is to alter each human ranch's mana reactor to fire at the Great Seed. Yggdrasill had also placed the Summon Spirits' mana links as a cage for the seed, but as the group had been making pacts with them, the protection was weakening. If the Great Seed is freed and given all of the ranches' mana, it will become the Giant Tree again, destroying Martel's soul in the process.

After this explanation, Botta and a group of Renegade soldiers take the party to the Remote Island Human Ranch, where they instruct the party not to blow the ranch up this time, then part ways until after Rodyle has been defeated. Rodyle's last action was to turn on the self-destruct system, and Raine finds herself unable to stop it in time, until Botta and two soldiers rush in and take over, ushering the group out through a hatch. As soon as the party escapes, Botta locks the hatch, because he knows that the whole area will soon be filling with seawater, and wants to prevent the water from entering the area where the party is. After a touching scene of last words in which the Renegades refuse to save themselves, Botta closes the shutter over the window, so that the party doesn't have to watch them drown. They go back to the Sylvarant Base and inform Yuan of all that happened. He activates the dimensional transfer system as promised; presumably, he was reluctant to show weakness in front of the party.

The Renegades appear later when the party is about to form a pact with the Summon Spirits of Light. Kratos attempts to stop them, but Yuan gets in his way, allowing the party to pass through unhindered and form the pact. After this backfires, creating a twisted and destructive form of the Great Tree, the Renegades cut off the flow of mana to the Tree, except for the team at Forcystus' ranch in Iselia, which has been killed; the party will need to shut that one down on their own. The Renegades take Sheena with them to the Mana Cannon in order to fire the Summon Spirits' mana at the twisted Tree, while Kratos and the party go to the Iselia Ranch. Once the twisted Great Tree is subdued, the Renegades once again vanish for a time.

Later, after Colette's Chronic Angelus Crystallus Inofficium has been cured, the group spends the night at Altessa's. Yuan wakes Lloyd up in the middle of the night, asks him if he wants to meet his father, then teleports away. When Lloyd ventures outside, he is immediately held at swordpoint by two Renegade soldiers, while two more are seen doing the same to Kratos, as Yuan stands and observes it all. Yuan reveals that Kratos is Lloyd's father, and proceeds to taunt Kratos and threaten Lloyd, in an effort to get Kratos to release Origin's Seal. By doing this, Yuan intends to gain control of the Eternal Sword, and thus be able to openly oppose Mithos Yggdrasill. Unfortunately, Mithos (who has been traveling with the party while disguised in his child form) interrupts the scene, thus discovering that Yuan is the leader of the Renegades. This puts the entire organization in danger, and after Mithos leaves, Yuan hurries away so that he can send his subordinates into hiding somewhere where Cruxis (hopefully) will not be able to find them.

At this point, Yuan seems to be the only active Renegade remaining. When the way into the Tower of Salvation is blocked, he shows them an alternate way to reach Derris-Kharlan, stating that since Yggdrasill doesn't trust him anymore, Lloyd and the group are his only hope for being able to save the world; he seems to make it clear that he is helping the party out of necessity, not friendship.

Later, after Lloyd defeats Kratos at Origin's Seal and Kratos releases his body's mana in order to release the seal (which would normally be fatal), Yuan swoops in to catch him as he falls, and gives his old friend some of his body's own mana, so that Kratos will survive. After the group leaves for Dirk's house to have the dwarf forge the Ring of the Pact, none of the Renegades have any further role in the game.
