Remsen Stakes
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Remsen Stakes is a Grade II race for thoroughbred horses. The Remsen is open to two-year-olds who are up for the one and one-eighths of a mile distance. The race is run each November at Aqueduct Racetrack for a purse of $200,000.
It is influential as one of the last graded stakes for two-year-olds in New York.
The Remsen, which ran first in 1904, is named for Colonel Joremus Remsen (l735 to l790), leader of the Revolutionary forces at the Battle of Long Island. Colonel Remsen's family at one time owned a large portion of Long Island.
Among other notable horses, the Remsen was won by Damascus in 1966, Northern Dancer in 1963, Carry Back in 1960, and Grey Lag in 1920.
