Reliques of Father Prout

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Father Prout was the pseudonym of Reverend Francis Sylvester Mahony who gave up his clerical position for a literary career. His "Prout Papers" in Fraser's Magazine were popular. Mahony at one point was director of the magazine. During the last eight years of his life his articles formed the chief atttraction of the "Globe" newspaper. The Reliques of Father Prout originally appeared in two volumes in 1836 with illustrations by Maclise. They were reissued in Bohn's Illustrated Library (Messrs. Bell & Daldy). The Last Reliques of Father Prout by Blanchard Jerrold appeared in 1876, ten years after Mahony's death.
