Reipard La Shiec (known as Lassic in the original Phantasy Star) is a major villain in the Phantasy Star series of computer role-playing games. He is featured as a boss in two games of the series: Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star IV. He is responsible for bringing Dark Force into Algol.

[edit] Pre-Phantasy Star

Reipard La Shiec served as head priest and prime minister for the Palman monarchy until King Aures Landale's sudden death in AW 328. Because the heir to the throne (Alis Landale) was too young to rule, La Shiec was appointed provisional king. Between AW 328 and AW 341, he brought many improvements to the Algolian government: he improved interplanetary spaceflight and promoted colonization on Motavia and Dezolis, among other things.

However, in AW 341, one year before the events of Phantasy Star, La Shiec somehow learned the secret of Algol's creation and its purpose. He formed a dimensional gate and summoned Dark Force, a projection of the Profound Darkness, and became its servant. Seeking more power, La Shiec increased taxation and ordered the construction of a massive personal fortress called the Air Castle, which would float invisibly in the sky above Baya Malay. Some of the people of Palma noticed the change in their ruler and became discontented, especially when monsters started to roam Palma and terrorize the citizens' formerly peaceful lives.

Depending on which version of the game you have (some of this information comes from the Phantsy Star Compendium, a book released in Japan that was never officially translated or released in America), since there were a few liberties taken in localization of the first Phantasy Star, this doesn't hold completely true. According to the American backstory, Lassic (which was what La Shiec's name was translated to) was a good king. However, a fear of death caused him to join a religious cult that promised him immortality. This cult, however turned him evil, at which point he began to terrorize Algol. This seems to imply, as noted by some lines in Phantasy Star IV, where La Shiec says "I'm melting! Once again, my body is dissolving! But, even now, I will not die! I will reincarnate over and over again. I must work for Him! As long as he exists, I will continue to bring calamity to the future of Algo!" that rather than being resurrected, that the Air Castle and La Shiec never were (nor could be) destroyed, at least not unless the Profound Darkness/Dark Force were destroyed.

[edit] Phantasy Star

Alis Landale's "brother," Nero, was one of the Palmans who was suspicious of La Shiec. While investigating the ruler's changes, Nero was murdered by La Shiec's secret police, prompting Alis to seek revenge on La Shiec. With the help of the Musk Cat Myau, the warrior Odin, and the Esper Lutz, Alis set off to overthrow La Shiec. After overcoming many obstacles, Alis succeeded in finding the Aeroprism, an object that allowed her to see La Shiec's Air Castle. She and her allies confronted and killed La Shiec and defeated Dark Force.

[edit] Game-specific information

In Phantasy Star, La Shiec is the second to last boss. He has 238 hit points, and after defeating him it is stated that "Alis has accomplished her wish" and "Nero is satisfied... in heaven."

[edit] Phantasy Star IV

Even after being defeated by Alis, La Shiec returned from the dead in AW 2284, coinciding with the return of the planet Rykros and the imminent release of the Profound Darkness. La Shiec still held a grudge with Lutz, but was confined to his Air Castle because of limitations of the magic that was used to resurrect him. Since he could not go to Rune Walsh (the fifth-generation Lutz), La Shiec sent his minions to Dezolis to steal the Eclipse Torch, then let down the defenses around his Air Castle to lure the Esper to him.

La Shiec's plan succeeded in that it brings Rune to him, but backfired when he is defeated by Rune and his allies in combat. La Shiec was once again defeated and his Air Castle was destroyed; permanently this time, because of the defeat of both Dark Force and the Profound Darkness.

[edit] Game-specific information

In Phantasy Star IV, La Shiec is the thirteenth boss. He is found in his Air Castle. He has 6,383 hit points. Defeating him earns the characters 29,999 experience and 1 Meseta.
