Reinhard von Lohengramm

Reinhard von Lohengramm (formerly Reinhard von Müsel) is a character in Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

He started his life as a "poor" noble who lived with his father and his older sister Annerose. His mother died in an early age so he knows very little about her, thus she was barely mentioned in the story. When Reinhard moved to a middle class suburban neighborhood, where he met Siegfried Kircheis and they soon became inseparable friends. When his father sold Annerose to become Kaiser Friedrich IV's concubine, he swore that he would overthrow the Goldenbaum dynasty to rescue his older sister. He then left school to join the military academy and persuaded Kircheis to come along with him.

He became an Admiral at an early age around the age of 20 and Kircheis became his military advisor. He led countless battles against the Free Planets Alliance so he could be closer to saving his sister from the clutches of the Kaiser. He was known to jealous nobles/officers as "The Blonde Brat". After becoming appointed as a chancellor of the Kaiser, he made several reforms that helped the commoners and also gave the nobles less power. This infuriated many hard liner nobles and many of them created the lippstadt rebellion, who was led by Otto von Braunschweig. When Reinhard knew about the rebellion, he ordered troops to arrest every noble they can in the capital, but however, a good number of them escaped and they also took a good proportion of starships of the galactic empire with them. But however, the rebellion was soon crushed due to the lack of tactics of the nobles. After the rebellion, a servant of Braunschweig carried his masters body with a glass coffin to show Reinhard and then took out a gun in order to assassinate him. But however, the servant missed and hit Kircheis in the neck, this shocked Reinhard because his best friend sacrificed himself in order to protect him, and then he died soon after. Reinhard was shocked about Kircheis's death because he was his only friend that came along with him everywhere he went, this torment was stuck with him on his whole life, but in order to remember him, he had a picture of him, Kireheis, and his sister Annerose in a locket with a piece of Kircheis's hair on it. Soon after the rebellion, Kaiser Fredrick IV had a heart attack and didn't leave a successor to take over in his place. After a series of searching at his family tree, the government picked Erwin Joseph II, who was the grandson of the late kaiser. The only problem is that, he was just a mere boy who wasn't ready on leading an empire, so this gave Reinhard a chance to overthrow the Goldendaum dynasty. But however, two remaining loyalists of the past rebellion sneaked into his mansion and took away the young kaiser and then they sought asylum at the Free Planets Alliance so they could continue the Goldenbaum dynasty there because they fear of Reinhard planning to kill the kaiser.

Without the kaiser, Reinhard to continued on his work to make the lives the empire better. Conquest after conquest, soldiers yelled "Seig Kaiser Reinhard", meaning long life kaiser Reinhard, yet he was still not kaiser at all. When Reinhard actually took the throne, he was renamed Kaiser Reinhard von Lohengramm and the dynasty named from Goldenbaum was changed to the new year of Lohengramm, and also calling it the new imperial year, since the past dynasty doesn't exist anymore, a new year starts from 1. After noticing the Free Planets Alliance's weaknesses from past failed invasions, he led a fleet personally to fight against Yang Wenli, who was considered to be his only opponent he couldn't beat and he thought he could have a chance to on this one, but unfortunately for him, all of his ships around him were perished and he lost the fight with Yang. They both talked in the Brunsweld, the kaiser's personal flagship, and talk about their opinions about government rule. After their brief conversation, the capital of the Free Planets Alliance, Heinassen, was captured by the empire. As for Reinhard, he still worked in his office to keep the empire from collapsing and tried to make other people's lives better. He thought that his rival, Yang Wenli, married and then retired after the war because there was no use fighting more, but that was actually true, the fact that he wanted to start a family but he was arrested because he was a suspect of an assassination. He was then rescued and escaped Heinassen and hid in a secret fleet that his friends were assembling. Reinhard was surprised but wasn't angry at all of Yang's escape, he thought that it would be fun to fight him again and then crush him once and for all. But when Yang and his small fleet took over the space fortress planet, Isherlon, this infuriated Reinhard because it seemed that nothing was ever done to stop this incident. He noticed that there is no point on invading Isherlon and spared Yang and his comrades. He then changed his mind and led another fleet against Yang in order to take over Isherlon and destroy Yang, but however, the biblical fight of monarchy and democracy became a stalemate and Rienhard, who was mysteriously ill, then called for peace. Yang Wenli decided to see the Kaiser personally so he sent a small entourage with him for the negotiations. But the earth cult, who disguised themselves as Imperial troops, took over Yang's ship and hunted him down. One member of the cult shot Yang in the leg and ran away. He was shot in the main artery and died due from his wound. When the kaiser found out about his death, he was completely shocking realizing that he lost his chance in order to defeat someone that he couldn't beat, he wasn't as shocked like this before since the death of Kircheis. As the kaiser's health deteriorated due to overwork, he still wanted to take Isheron from the rebels and claim himself ruler of the universe. He fought again after Isherlon claiming themselves as the Free Planets Alliance of August, using Yang Wenli's death to make them strong and unbreakable. Reinhard sent another fleet in order to defeat the rebels in a winner takes all fight. Yang's successor, Julian Mintz, led a small group of rosen ritters, a crack group of armored soldiers, to crash a transport ship into Reinhard's flagship and get the Kaiser to declare peace. His cabinet said that they should kill Julian, who was leading the group himself, but Reinhard insisted that he should be let inside his room. When Julian finally arrived in front of the feverishly ill Kaiser Rienhard, he was congratuated on his daring attack and declared a ceasefire in order to negotiate a peace treaty. Julian Mintz and his entourage went to Phezzan, the new capital of the empire, to get Reinhard to create a parliament in the empire and returning Isherlon if the Kaier returned Heinassen, he said he will make no guarantee but would see what he could do. As the Kaiser was near his death, one of the main earth cultist members, Adrian Rubinsky, killed himself by removing his feeding tube and his death triggered a bomb by using his brain as the detonator from brainwaves, and the good proportion of the capital was destroyed by underground bombs that Rubinsky installed before his death. Kaiser Reinhard was resting inside a museum and was rescued by members of his cabinet and was sent to a hotel where he could finally rest at peace. After failing to kill the kaiser, the remaining earth cult then staged an attack on the kaiser and finally kill him before he could die peacefully, it was discovered by interrogating a former member of the lippstandt rebellion and said that 30 members of the cult will be there at nighttime. When Julian, Lt. Col Poplan, and Admiral Attemborough were there for the peace negotiation, the power went out in the hotel and they made to fight their way to destroy the last of the cult. A bomb exploded in a room and a cult member yelled out that they killed the kaiser and they were victorious, Julian then killed the last leader of the cult in order to avenge the death of Yang Wenli. The past room that exploded, wasn't Kaiser Reinhard's room, but it was one of his marshalls, military minister Paul von Oberstein, who died soon after the explosion. As for the Kaiser, he was safe and sound in his room with his wife, son, his sister, and officers who followed him till the end. One of his last words, he wanted his wife Empress Hildegard Von Lohengramm, that if his infant son could not successfully continue the Lohengramm dynasty in the future, then there will be no need for that dynasty to reign. He died at the age of 25 and only reigned for 2 years. His wife said that he did not die from falling to an illness, but died upon completing his destiny, and everyone should remember that.
