Reichsvertretung der Deutschen Juden

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reichsvertretung der Deutschen Juden (Reich Deputation of German Jews) was founded on 17 September 1933. It was organized to represent Jewish interests at a national level. The Reichsvertretung had a response to the Nuremberg Laws. The Berlin Reform rabbi Leo Baeck was elected president of the Reichsvertretung with Otto Hirsch acting as chairman.

The Reichsvertretung was, among others, a self-help organization and a major support for Jewish emigrants from Germany.

With the passing of the Nuremberg Race Laws in 1935, the Reichsvertretung was forced to rename itself as Reichsvertretung der Juden in Deutschland (Reich Deputation of Jews in Germany) In June 1939 the Reichsvertretung was subsumed under the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland which was dissolved forcibly in 1943.
