Regigigas (レジギガス Rejigigasu?, Regigigas in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise — a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Regigigas is one of the legendary Pokémon that premiers in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Regigigas in the games, anime, and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Regigigas’s name comes from regis, the Latin word for royal or king, and gigas, a Greek word for giant. Thus, Regigigas’s name means “Royal Giant”, “Giant King” or “King of Giants”. Thusly, Regigigas is often fittingly considered the "leader" of the three Regis (Regirock, Regice and Registeel), and it will only appear if the three are gathered.

[edit] Biological characteristics

Regigigas is a tall humanoid golem. Its body is mostly white with yellow plates on its shoulders, arms, and its facial area. Instead of a face, Regigigas has a Braille-like pattern of dots on its middle and multicolored dots on its body. It also has several black markings all around its body, and shrubs on its head and feet. It also bears three spots, red, blue, and silver, on both sides of its chest, most likely representing Regirock, Regice, and Registeel, respectively. It shares a similar name and body structure with Regirock, Regice and Registeel. The main difference is that Regigigas is not based on an element, instead being a Normal-type. In the game, there is a legend that says Regigigas could move a full continent if pulled with a rope.

[edit] In the video games

Regigigas is one of the legendary Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, in which it acts as the leader of the Regi trio. It can only be found if the player has brought Regirock, Regice, and Registeel (transferred from Pal Park) to the Kissaki Temple, after the player has defeated the Sinnoh Elite Four and obtained the National Pokédex. This is comparable to Mewtwo, who can only be found in Cerulean Cave after defeating the Kanto Elite Four. However, it should be noted that the appearance of Mewtwo does not require the possession of specific Pokémon, as with Regigigas.

As with the other three “Regi” Pokémon, Regigigas is weak to Fighting attacks. It is also immune to Ghost attacks because of its Normal type.

Regigigas is generally considered the leader of the “Regis”. This is probably due to its Level 70 appearance, as opposed to the others’ Level 40 appearance, and the fact that Regigigas has a much larger base stat total (670) than the other Regis (580), which makes it more powerful overall.

On the other hand, its ability, “Slow Start”, halves its attack and speed for the first few turns of a battle. This provides the challenge of weakening Regigigas without completely destroying it. Interestingly, Regigigas is the only Pokémon that cannot learn defensive TMs such as Rest and Protect.[3] This unique property makes it relatively difficult to preserve Regigigas' health until Slow Start wears off.
