Regency Furniture Stadium will be a 4,500-seat baseball-only stadium in Waldorf, Maryland, that will open in 2008. It is to be the home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs baseball team. With the groundbreaking for Southern Maryland's new stadium, a local company, Regency Furniture, purchased the naming rights for $2.88 million over 10 years.[1]

Regency Furniture Stadium will be capped by sloping red roofs designed to pay homage to the Southern Maryland region's tobacco barns.[2]

[edit] History

The ballpark was originally slated to be built in the town of Hughesville, but the residents voted against it in order to maintain the rural integrity of the area.[3] After Hughesville residents denied the ballpark, all interest shifted to the town of Waldorf.[4] The Atlantic League's formally announced an expansion team for Waldorf on February 15, 2006, to begin play in the 2008 season.[5] The Blue Crabs were originally supposed to be an expansion team for the 2007 season, but the construction bids for Regency Furniture Stadium came in over budget. The ballpark will now open in 2008.[6]

There are plans to have an athletic complex surrounding Regency Furniture Stadium, which will include adjoining fields for community use. Officials close to the action wish to name the athletic complex after former Maryland senator John Thomas Parran, Jr., but details have yet to be worked out.[7]
