[edit] Problems with map

This map presents several problems already present in the political map of Europe (see Europe political map Talk page), but some more seem to appear due to the disputed definitions of the European regions. These problems are:

  • If Asiatic Turkey is culturally European (witch is highly disputed), what's its region? Probably Southern Europe (green).
geographicaly this territory is asian - that's why it is colored pink. See point c) and others at Europe political map Talk page.Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
  • If Cyprus is European, what's its region? Probably Southern Europe (green).
Cyprus is geographicaly asian. Becouse of that it is colored pink.Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
  • If the Caucasian countries (all of them or just some) are culturally European (which is highly disputed), what's their region? Probably the Caucasus (that doesn't exist in the map)? Why is only Armenia noted as considered European because of cultural ties, and not Georgia?
The regions are only north/south/east/etc. - there are no 'names' here like "Baltic", "Nordic", "Slavic", "Balkan", "Alpine", etc. - so "Caucasus" is inappropriate - currently the european parts of Georgia and Azerbaijan are colored orange that means "East".Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
  • Are all of the Balkans Southern Europe (green)?
States are not divided on the map. Such corrections would be good, but until now no one has uploaded a map with purely central/east/west/north/south division.
  • Is not southern France Southern Europe (green)?
States are not divided on the map. Such corrections would be good, but until now no one has uploaded a map with purely central/east/west/north/south division.
  • Is not Corsica Southern Europe (green)?
as above - states are not divided. If a distinction between Corsica and other French parts is made - then southern France should be shown as south Europe (as you suggested above), Northern UK maybe too, some parts of the Balkan countries maybe should change too - this should be done at once, not only only for Corsica.Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
  • Are the Baltic countries in Northern Europe (purple) or in the Baltic (that doesn't exist in the map)?
as above. No name-regions, only directions - central/north/south/east/west. If we start using other names - the overlapping would be much bigger - see descriptions of the regions in the right of the picture (it sounds as if every one country is included in at least two regions).Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
  • Doesn't the definition of Western Europe (red) appear to be too restricted?

There may exist some other problems. I believe that there are some ambiguities that derive from the confusion of a political map (representing State borders) and a map of regions. And are regions cultural, political, economical or geographic? Maybe the best thing to do is try to come up with the map that does acknowledge all these ambiguities! Agree. But very hard to accomplish. Another possibility - multiple maps - one "geographical" east/west/etc. (current one), one cultural (maybe there are somewhere such maps?), some political (on another pages there are already such maps or at least lists - of the EU+candidates, Schengen area, NATO, CIS, Eurozone, CoE, etc.), economic (there is a List_of_European_countries_by_GDP).
In fact, Turkey and Cyprus could be placed in the region of the Middle East. The Ogre 16:07, 15 July 2005 (UTC)
They are, on the Asia page - SouthWestAsia/MiddleEast.Alinor 20:36, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

It seems that the misunderstanding that this map represents cultural regions was cleared - it represents east/west/etc. regions with the states as a whole assigned to one single group. Does anyone objects the east/west/etc. grouppings (such as assiging Ireland to north or similar)?Alinor 16:02, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

Anyway, the dispute about the regions of Europe should be in the Regions of Europe page (and its talk page), not on the page for this image that is only visualizing some aspects (geographical, not cultural, economic or other) of that particular page.Alinor 16:08, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Iceland

It would be great if we had some of that southern European weather but it is a bit of wishful thinking I think, just like coloring Iceland green on this map. :) --Bjarki 14:21, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

YES! The Ogre 15:02, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
Don't be so envious of southern European weather, however. It's 35º to 40º Celsius outside, the air is dry and all the forests are burning... It's probably much nicer in Iceland - for the likes of me, of course! :) The Ogre 15:05, 16 July 2005 (UTC)
Color corrected.Alinor 19:24, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Greenland

How should we color Greenland - as dark pink (meaning "culturaly european, geographicaly north american") or leave it as it is now - gray (meaning "non-european geographicaly")?Alinor 20:40, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Kaliningrad

Kaliningrad is currently shown with a color different than Russia's color. According to the rule of not-dividing the countries we should color Kaliningrad orange (as the rest of Russia), just as Corsica is colored red (as the rest of France).Alinor 15:57, 19 July 2005 (UTC)

The same applies for the exclave of Nakhichevan, which has a different color from the rest of Azerbaijan. narkisto 22:16, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
