[edit] "The Wiki Way" and similar proposals
I just wanted to compliment you on keeping an eye on this topic, while at the same time keeping your cool. My feeling is that Xiong is looking to engender heated responses, and it benefits the community for him not simply to be rebuffed (when he's wrong and is seeking confrontation rather than consensus), but for him to be rebuffed calmly, in the spirit of consensus, and without aggression. Thanks again. Nandesuka 12:11, 11 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Bush
It wasn't even the word Bush, it was "Bush's". I couldn't imagine any purpose to that red link, so I removed it. I figured it was probably only there by accident. Everyking 02:43, 12 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your friends page
As happy as I was to be on your friends page, I feel you are correct in deleting it. After seeing you and Essjay with friends pages, I thought I might want to create one of my own, but decided against it out of better judgement. While I admire you both, and consider you to be great editors (as I do for many others out there), one runs afoul of watching out for others' feelings whenever one creates a page like this. I noticed most of those users you listed were the ones who helped you out in the Redwolfisgay saga, and removing some who do not consider you a friend, or whom you no longer consider friends would be seen as quite rude. You seem like a welcoming user, and a nice person, but the thing about the internet is that, for all I know, you could be an axe murderer, or crazy (not that there is anything wrong with axe murdering), and the same can be said of me, or any other member here, as much as I'd love to believe otherwise. Please don't take this personally, as I love to come picnic at your talk page constantly, but I think you were right in removing it. - I am in complete agreement with you on that. Matrix 2 made my head hurt, and the girl I went with to see it kept laughing when Smith would absorb someone. It tried too hard to philisophiclize and make connections with religion and such. The first was kickass, the second one was terrible, and the third O.K. [edit] Something I saw
User:Johnwilkesbooth, I saw that on your front page about him. I just don't understand why that username could be "offensive", he's just a person. If that's offensive then wouldn't that make any username after a person offensive. Just because he killed someone doesn't make it offensive. I have Fascist in my username and that's offensive to some people, but no one cares along with me. It's a political belief, and John Wilkes Booth is just a person. That's all I'm saying, I don't really have any reason to care, but I just think if someone wanted that name they should get that name. The Fascist Chicken 20:17, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
- I blocked him for shooting Lincoln. If someone signs on with the screen name Bin Laden, I'll block him too. Redwolf24 (talk) 22:35, 12 September 2005 (UTC)
But he (meaning the person who has the username) didn't shoot Lincoln, and Bin Laden is just a person too. I hate what he did, but it's just a name, so people should be allowed to have it, its just censoring, maybe people believe what Bin Laden or Booth believed and they want to use their names to show it. I only think the one's that should be blocked are like "____isgay" or "_____isadirty**^*^&%%*^&*", not names, would someone with the username JesusChrist be offensive no, because you're a hypocrite, you can block some names that might be offensive but not all. So therefore none should be blocked. That's just what I think, I know you don't care, and that you don't care that I'm fighting with you about this. The Fascist Chicken 00:22, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- Names like Hitler and Bin Laden and to a lesser extent, Johnwilkesbooth, are just intended to offend. When I see crap that's truly INTENDED to offend, I will block it. Redwolf24 (talk) 00:37, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- How do you know it is "crap that's truly INTENDED to offend"? Intended? That seems to me to be a rather blatant POV statement which ignores the assume-good-faith dictum! Hmmm. Moriori 07:45, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
Exactly Moriori gets what I'm saying. See whoever that is is a genius. The Fascist Chicken 19:05, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
Redwolf, I hope you will not block me for my user name. I mean, I killed plenty of people. Actually, I was wondering about that... is my user name out-of-line? Do you have any idea about copyright status of names? I would really hate to change my name, but don't want to be penalized for it either. Thanks for any help. --Lord Voldemort (Dark Mark) 19:41, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Harry Potter trolling
Hmmmm... I had counted 16-8; I didn't notice that one was unsigned and another anon. That makes 67% which is no consensus... if it's 16-6 it would make 72% which is still no consensus, or your count of 16-5, which is 76%, in my opinion still no consensus, but a very close no consensus. Normally I go for about 80%, especially when there's a large number of votes. My personal opinion is that this is a pretty silly article, and I'm hoping that someone with some time and knowledge quickly merges the article into a very small section of some other article, in which case this can become a redirect. But I'm just a janitor, trying my best to implement the (often unclear) will of the people. moink 16:27, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- Oh, I hadn't noticed when I wrote this that someone later changed the decision. Well, whatever. We've always known that different admins would have different definitions of "consensus." Not a big deal. moink 16:36, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
-
- One more quick comment. I just reread Wikipedia:Consensus to refresh myself on what it meant in practice. I had apparently missed this edit: [1] which changed the AfD definition from 80% to 67%, messing with my mathematical argument up there considerably. I guess there's no consensus on consensus. :) moink 16:58, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] block 3RR troll please
Please block this guy, 66.43.173.74 for his massive 3RR with POV insertions[2] to Ray Nagin article. All these long John Silver sockpuppets keep hitting the article every day. IP 209.x is the main sockpuppet.Voice of All (talk) 17:29, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- You said that three hours ago, while I was at school... so I won't block them as I'm sure they've either stopped or been blocked. Redwolf24 (talk) 22:10, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
- The problem is that the only stop for a few hours, and then resume. They usually do it twice a day, and then start agian on the next day. This has been going on for days, these 3RR sockpuppets need to be blocked. I hate having to bother you over this kind of stuff, and that is why I will run for adminship on the 15th of October, as you suggested.Voice of All (talk) 02:45, 14 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Your revert on the Harry Potter AfD
I don't understand why you reverted. The close was no consensus merge, then some other guy just goes in, does an out-of-process speedy, and edits the close. This doesn't mean the debate "ended up" being closed as a delete, in fact it was completely out of process and opposed by at least two other sysops. I've already moved the post-close comment to the proper place, the discussion page for that AfD debate. Please revert your edit. --Tony SidawayTalk 02:05, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
- Two sysops opposing doesn't really matter... me and Splash support, so I guess it makes it even. Moink didn't know that the AfD consensus was normally 67%, he thought it was still 80%, as it was at one time. There was a 72% delete ratio, after we went over which votes were legit. Also look at Moink's comment on my talk page and the VfU. Redwolf24 (talk) 02:07, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] sound excerpts and copyright
Hi Redwolf
Do you know of any Wikipedian who can and is willing to provide advice about the use of sound excerpts on W from commercial recordings? In particular, I need to know how to tag excerpts from a commercial recording by a company that has granted permission for use in writing (e.g., at the top of Johann Sebastian Bach. I'd also like to know whether we can use short grabs from commercial recordings without seeking permission. If so, how short do they have to be?
This is an important issue for composer articles, which could be significantly improved with the judicious use of sound excerpts from commercial recordings.
Tony 02:30, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
First: IANAA/TINLA.
Second: If you have permission, then upload the file and list the permission on the page. Make sure it isn't a "non-commerical use only" permission, as that isn't allowed. Make sure to maintain a copy of the written permission in case it is ever challenged. (Although, I don't know where you would send it if it were; if you're particularly paranoid, scan it in and upload the image, then link it to the sound file.) There may be a "used with permission" tag, if not, just put "Used with permission" on the sound page and specify the permission. (Again, no non-commercial only permissions.)
Third: I believe you can use short grabs (30 secs or less) without permission, but I could be wrong. Anyone else know?
Hope that helps. -- Essjay · Talk 02:43, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
