Talk:Red Pyramid
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"el-haram" does not mean pyramid, it means "sanctuary". Specifically it means "forbidden", as in a place that is forbidden, but this is a common name for shrines and sanctuaries including al-Haram-al-Sharif, al-Haram al-Makki al-Sharif, etc.
If local Egyptians (perhaps the ones living closest to the pyramids?) have taken to calling these pagan burial sites by this name it seems at odds with mainstream Muslim/Arab traditions and it would be good to get a clarification here if not in the article itself.
- Indeed it does. "Haram" (Arabic: هرم) with "H" means pyramid in Arabic. What you are referring to is حرم with a fricative "H" (IPA [ħ])
