The authors recounted some troubling instances of the U.S. State Department denouncing its own citizens. Ironically, it was the State Department and not the Zonians who were disconnected and ignorant of grass-roots Panamanian opinion. It appears that the patrician State officials felt more class-based loyalty to Latin American elites than to the grubby, calloused, blue-collar Americans who made the Canal work, and the privileged Panamanian elites found ready allies in the U.S. State Department against working-class Panamanians and Americans alike.Megahaole 07:04, 30 March 2007 (UTC)
