Redswoosh
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Redswoosh is the developer of the peer-to-peer (P2P) file distribution protocol designed for bandwidth efficiency in the transfer of large media files.
The program claims to be similar to P2P but the main difference is that it is focus more for the publisher/distributer of the original files. The distributor or original seeder creates a redswoosh link of their file and the publishes it on their webpage or through redswoosh website. The user then simply clicks on the link and then downloads it. The redswoosh client intercepts the link in the background and downloads it to the user via P2P but to the end user it feels like http or through their browsers. Thus most of the heavy traffic burden will be place on the P2P users and not on the original distributor or website.
The program is also very difficult to uninstall and feels very spyware/virus like. When you uninstall it, the program opens up your browser, ask for feedback and claims to be uninstalled, but if you recheck your processes and program files, the redswoosh program reappears which means their is another copy from somewhere. This also happens if you delete the folder manually. Users are urge to be cautious of this factor before installing the program.
The company offers a Developer's Kit for third-party development. The SDK includes support for predelivery, RSS feeds, widgets, and Javascript applications. There is a forum and a wiki available for the developer community.
