[edit] Synopsis
The film itself is set in rural Maryland in 1986. The plot is set into motion when a U.S. Army soldier accidentally spills a 50 gallon drum of nuclear waste off the back of his jeep. The accident occurred after the soldier driving the Jeep offered a lit joint to his passenger (a dog), then lost control of the vehicle when the joint burned his hand after the k-9's rejection. The drum is found by a stereotypical back-woods family who proceed to empty out the drum in order to use it as part of their new moonshine still. Unfortunately for the rednecks and the consumers of their product, the toxic waste residue left in the drum produces a batch of liquor that turns those who consume it into zombies.
Meanwhile, a group of young people are camping in the nearby woods. Usual zombie hijinks ensue, with all but one of the camping protagonists winding up as zombie fodder.
[edit] Details
The film never takes itself too seriously, and although it is quite violent, with gory special effects, humorous moments abound in the film. In a particularly amusing scene, a living human imitates an undead zombie and leads a group of the flesh eaters to the spot where one of his fellow campers is hiding. "Jethro" the main zombie, sucks an eyeball out of a skull in one early scene, only to have his head "shovelled off" later on!
While the film is considered a "Cult" or "Campy Classic" (sometimes categorised as "So bad, it's good!") and never achieved mainstream success, the film's title and poster became infamous, with the title used as an answer to a question in the 1980s edition of "Trivial Pursuit" (the question being "What film has the tagline 'They're Tobacco Chewin', Gut Chompin', Cannibal Kinfolk from Hell!'").
The film also features extremely bad, but entertaining and original songs built around redneck and zombie themes.
[edit] Production
Because it was the first film shot entirely on video Troma productions bought "Redneck Zombies" for about 10K & a small profit percentage, which Troma buried in Travel expences to take "Zombies" to Canne. Director Pericles Lewnes went on to supervise special effects and do 2nd unit work for Troma on "War", "Sgt.Kabukiman NYPD" and "Toxic Avenger" Parts 2 & 3. "Jethro"(William Decker) and Lewnes also have small thug parts in Toxic's 2&3.
