[edit] Basic Information
Redmond High sits atop Education Hill in Redmond, Washington, and is part of the Lake Washington School District (LWSD). The old Redmond High School building was replaced in 2003 with the two story structure pictured to the right. The new building features many environmentally friendly energy alternatives such as a large photovoltaic array and a state-of the-art geothermal heating system.
As of 2006, the school principal of RHS is Jane Todd. The school's two assistant principals are Lloyd Higgins and Melissa Routh; both Jane Todd and Melissa Routh entered their positions at the start of the 2006-07 school year, replacing the former principal Brian Hunter and former assistant principal Debra Becker.
[edit] Academics
Redmond High School prides itself on rigorous curriculum and a positive learning environment. Redmond is recognized by the University of Washington as one of the top-twenty public high schools in the state, and Redmond High School produces many Merit-Scholars each year.
Brian Anderson, an English teacher at RHS, recently received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching. He was also spotlighted in an article which appeared in Seattle Metropolitan, a magazine column which focuses on events and happenings in and around Seattle, Washington. The article is located on page 63 of the December 2006 issue.
[edit] Athletics
Redmond High School is home to one of the Lake Washington School District's most difficult Cross-Country courses, which is located just across the street from RHS campus in Hartman Park; Hartman also features the high school's largest baseball field and the Redmond public pool. The Redmond Pool is a medium-sized recreational pool with six lanes stretching twenty-five yards. The campus includes a state-of-the-art football stadium containing an Astroturf football field designed with a specialized drainage system to accommodate the Eastside's moist weather. The stadium also features an 8-lane track surrounding the football field, two long/triple jump pits, one shot pit, one high-jump pit and a pole-vault pit. Adjacent to the stadium there is a practice soccer field, six tennis courts, and two softball fields. The main campus building has one full sized basketball court (with stands out) and a second practice court.
The Redmond High sports department has several programs that have had recent successes. Ross "Rojo" Johnson led the Redmond High Girl's Volleyball team to a third place finish at state, led by Katie Gysler. The football team had a decent season, going to the playoffs where they were defeated by Tahoma High School, and failed to defeat their rival Eastlake High School for a third straight year. The Redmond Cross-Country team has remained consistently successful over the past several years, including a state fifth place by the girls and ninth by the boys. Redmond's track & field team also saw success in 2006, with senior Andrew Chapin winning a 4A state title in the triple jump. Redmond High School's sports department participates in Washington State's 4A league.
[edit] School Spirit
Redmond High School's mascot is the Mustang, and the school colors are predominantly dark green and gold, though in most ceremonies and events white is also included.
The Redmond High School Fight Song is taken from the theme song of Blazing Saddles. The lyrics were written by band director Andy Robertson.
-
- Fight on, Redmond Mustangs!
- The tales will be told
- Of champions and victors
- The bravest and the bold.
-
