Redback Networks was founded in August, 1996. It went public on May 17, 1999. Its stock is traded on NASDAQ under the symbol RBAK. On December 19, 2006 Redback announced an agreement to be acquired by Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) for $2.1 billion or $25 dollars per Redback share. The deal is expected to be completed in early 2007.

Redback's major products include SMS (Subscribers Management System), SmartEdge Service Gateway, SmartEdge Router, NetOp Policy Manager, and NetOp Element Manager.
- SMS – platform solution for provisioning, aggregating and managing broadband subscribers and services through a single, unified platform.
- Multi-Service Edge Router (formerly SmartEdge Service Gateway) – solution providing fully integrated broadband subscriber management, services aggregation and carrier-class edge routing; integrating the power of the SmartEdge Router system with the capabilities of the SMS family.
- SmartEdge Router – solution enabling carrier-class edge routing and dedicated access services, including MPLS VPN; hosting and network-based storage, and backbone core applications.
- NetOp family of network and service management software for advanced per-subscriber and per-session policy management, including NetOp Element Server and NetOp Policy Manager.
