Category:Redirect templates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Main Page trophy This category is a "template category". It is used to categorise pages which are in the template namespace. The category is part of the Wikipedia project infrastructure and should not be used to categorise pages belonging to other namespaces, in particular project main namespace pages  such as articles.
For this namespace Category:Wikipedia templates is the top (root level) template category.

Description
This category is for templates to be placed directly on redirects, after the redirection link, sample:

#REDIRECT America R to disambiguation page

They generally categorize redirects as well. Please add the templates also to the Wikipedia:Template messages/Redirect pages with output examples.

Please be diligent and add these appropriate templates on any page when you create a redirect, including when you Move pages.

They can be combined (and should be so, since they exist solely to provide proper auto-categorization) if and when such a variety of cases applies, for example, when a redirect (or move) to another template is a case variant of the name, and working template name can both inhabit the same line as the #redirect PageName affected.

Similarly, a move from a plural and capitalised proper sort of name to an NAMCON conventional singular, article title should use both (or one of it's many aliases) and R from plural.

Name alternative redirects are a particularly under-tagged group of aliased links as they are very common in historical articles where a variety of writers and commentaries and further complicated by different alliteration schemes, but having such 'older references' to a modern name requires much use of R from alternative name.

[edit] Cat trick

Pages redirecting to articles can quickly and conveniently categorized the same way as the article using

(This template uses the Category names only... not the prefix word 'Category:'!)

where categories are separated by pipe '|' characters, as one need only 'swipe and outline' the categories off the parent article, copy them into the edit buffer (using [Ctrl-C] on MS-Windows based (and most other) browsers) and then paste them in the template. The pipes will come along from the category line and you have to do no typing! Use the main article name as the pipetrick, and close the template. Like the above, it must be on the same line as the redirect. Oh! Good idea to section edit the main article page bottom and use an inline comment like '<!-- IF changing these categories please adjust categories in Redirect name as well. --->'
