[edit] Other recurring jokes
- Being one of the earliest jokes, whenever Patrick was serving others soup or other hot foods, he would blow on it once to cool it down, seeing that it did not succeed at first he would initially blow harder and harder each time until the soup manages to escape from the spoon and flies onto the person's face. First featured with soup in Jellyfishing, it made a comeback in the season 3 episode The Camping Episode, this time regarding marshmallows.
- In some episodes, Squidward gets stuck with Spongebob and Patrick (for example: The Camping Episode, Club Spongebob, and Wishing You Well.)
- In many particular episodes involving disasters or chaotic situations, a fish was known to scream "My legs!" or "My eyes!" in fear or pain. The fish was later revealed to be Fred.
- There seems to be a running joke of Spongebob and Patrick wanting to have mustaches, referenced in numerous episodes and the movie.
- When Patrick overhears a challenge, usually for SpongeBob, and a time frame given, he will emphasize that SpongeBob can do it in less than the actual time without realizing that he's actually pushing SpongeBob beyond his limits.
- Plankton's plans will never succeed in any episode that features one, including Plan Z in the movie.
- SpongeBob's parents' full names have not been revealed throughout the seasons.
- As a way of disposing of Plankton, Mr. Krabs will grab a straw from one of the customers' drinks, stuff Plankton inside, and blow on the straw sending him across the Krusty Krab and making him land on the Chum Bucket. When Plankton falls on the ground, he will sarcastically yell "Ouch!".
- In the earlier episodes, Squidward will be riding a bike near a cliff or valley and, through some encounter, will fall down the cliff and explode. The irony of this gag is that Squidward will usually never do anything that provokes the event.
- Squidward and some of the other main characters become crazy during the main event of the episode.
- Sometimes SpongeBob or Patrick use crazy eyes, possibly showing that they're dumb or immature.
- Timecards are often featured in episodes, usually when making a joke about the time a character takes to do something.
- Probably the longest running gag is the Krabby Patty secret formula/recipe. Even Mr.Krabs himself cannot discuss it with Spongebob or Squidward without "the secret handshake" which is a series of ridiculous stunts probably made so that, in the event, his employees don't just give the formula away.
- When a character mentions that Patrick is doing something, he is usually doing nothing or something else.
- Squidward insisting that he would be handsome, rich, and successful, if only he had hair.
- Spongebob failing to get his boating license no matter how hard he tries.
- When injured, Mrs. Puff inflates and speaks in a lower pitched voice, usually bemoaning "Oh SpongeBob, why?"
- Squidward's dislike of Spongebob, the Krusty Krab, and life in Bikini Bottom goes completely unnoticed by his neighbor.
- Due to his age, Mermaid Man often falls asleep and/or forgets what he was talking about.
- Patrick is occasionally shown with one tooth.
- In early episodes, someone with a deep male voice would shout out "You stink!", usually, if not always, at Squidward. In the episode Fools in April it's revealed that the person saying it is actually Squidward's mother.
- Usually when someone is blamed for someone or doing something annoying, an angry mob of Bikini Bottomites will chase them, with torches and pitchforks. The mobs are usually headed by a blue fish.
