Reconstructionist Rabbinical College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC), located in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, is the only seminary affiliated with Reconstructionist Judaism. It is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Graduates of the five-year program are required to spend one of the five years studying in Israel before graduating. Graduates receive the title of rabbi and a Master of Arts degree in the Hebrew language. RRC also offers a masters degree program and coordinates a cantorial program with nearby Gratz College.

The College also operates three program centers: Kolot, for gender and women's studies; the Center for Jewish Ethics, for Jewish ethics studies; and Hiddur, for studies on aging and Judaism.

The college was founded in 1968 by the founder of the Reconstructionist movement, Mordecai Kaplan, and was based in two brownstone buildings at 2308 North Broad Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In September 1982, the college moved to its current location at the former Curtis Mansion on Greenwood Avenue in Wyncote. The college's main building is 27,500 square feet and is red-brick, slate-roofed, and an example of Georgian architecture. It includes classrooms, a lounge, faculty and administrative offices, the Goldyne Savad Library Center, the Mordecai M. Kaplan Archives; a chapel; a media center, and conference rooms.
