- was president of the UC Students Association - worked for John Langmore - 1995 - finishes sixth out of seven on the Labor ticket, not elected - Nov 1996 - briefly talked about as a preselection candidate - 7 Jan 1997 - wins Rosemary Follett's seat on countback after her resignation; aided by the fact that rivals David Lamont (a former minister) and Silvia Zamora did not stand and Marion Reilly had already won a countback when Terry Connolly resigned - was, at the time, the youngest MLA to be elected to the Assembly, at 26 (since surpassed by Roslyn Dundas) - raised withdrawal of community policing as issue passionate about - given portfolios of economic development, tourism and environment - advocated increased funding for tourism campaigns to boost then-struggling sector - opening speech called for an end to economic rationalism (19 Feb 97) and declining services - supported (bipartisan) the creation of the Canberra Tourism and Events Corporation (Feb 97) - strongly supported would-be euthanasia bill in 97 - Apr 11 - successfully convinces assembly to hold new fast train inquiry - critical of Carnell over treatment of public service, contracts and job cuts - May 1997 - notes concern that John Dedman Parkway would negatively affect the Bruce/O'Connor Ridge - very critical of decision to charge for access for Tidbinbilla - June 1997 - strongly supports John Dedman Parkway, though still suggests concern about environment; amazingly, some question of a clash with then-Labor candidate Stanhope, who expressed frustration that the "no parkway" option had not received more attention (Stanhope suggested that he might support it one day but suggested it was too soon) - repeatedly raised concern about the slow rate of development of Gungahlin and the length of time it was taking to get basic services - repeatedly supported purchasing a stake in the privatised Canberra Airport, and failing to convince Carnell took it to the election as Labor policy - Aug 19, 1997 - joins with fellow lefties Berry and McRae to topple Whitecross as leader and install Berry; Corbell becomes Opposition Whip in addition to prior portfolios - supported successful banning of battery hens against wishes of government (bill introduced by Greens), Sep 1997 - Sep 1997 - pushes for upgrade of the Barton Highway - critical of Feel the Power campaign (firstly, for not allowing locals to tender, and secondly arguing for it to be canned altogether) - Nov 1997; parkway proposal shelved - up to 5 Dec 97
