Real estate within Australia is dominated by large franchise groups of real estate agents.

Property buyers and sellers largely rely on real estate agents to facilitate their property inquiries and transactions. Agents advertise properties for sale and rent in many forms of media, predominantly print (newspaper classified advertising) and the internet.

The two largest internet property portals are realestate.com.au and domain.com.au who claim over 3,700,000 and 2,000,000 visitors respectively each month. These are both controlled/owned by traditional media interests. There are a number of independent portals managed by industry bodies or franchise groups such as realestateview.com.au .

Most real estate agents also have their own website. These sites can be at the leading edge of internet development. For example a medium sized franchise group in Melbourne, Buxton Real Estate, appear to have produced the first real estate specific .mobi site buxton.mobi.
