Reading Speed

Reading Speed: The speed with which one can read as defined in WPM (words per minute) or WPH (words per hour).

Obtaining your WPM

To obtain a good average, begin by choosing a reading source of continuous, long, and largely unbroken passages. Try to avoid a text with multiple chapter breaks. Count the number of pages that you can read in a timed hour (have someone else time you, if necessary). Estimate the words per page by counting the number on a handful of randomly selected ones. Multiply the number of page faces you read over the course of a timed hour by the average number of words per page. Then subtract an estimate of the blank space that may have occurred because of chapter breaks or for any other reason. Take this final number and divide it by 60 minutes to get your WPM.

((Pages Read in a Timed Hour x Average Number of Words per Page) - overestimate due to blank spaces expressed as a total number of words*)/60 minutes = WPM

  • Calculate this in the same way that you calculated the first word total, this time by estimating the number of pages that any blank spaces may have taken up. Express any fractional remainder of the page total as a decimal.
