[edit] Background

Raymond Caine, Sr., is the younger brother of Lt. Horatio Caine, who is head of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab. When the federal government discovered that Ray, an undercover narcotics detective, was dirty, they forced him to fake his death and work for them even deeper undercover (episode 324, "10-7"). His DEA handler was Bob Keaton, who confirms to Horatio that Ray is alive after Horatio spots Keaton, who is supposed to be in prison in his role of drug dealer and abuser (episode 322, "Vengeance"). After his cover is blown and his son Ray Jr. is kidnapped, Raymond finally approaches his brother Horatio, and together they rescue the boy, fake Ray Sr.'s death (again), and pack the entire family off to Brazil for safety.

Unfortunately, Raymond cannot manage to keep himself clean even after his brother's desperate efforts to help him. He becomes involved with the Mala Noche gang in Rio de Janeiro, and he is eventually fatally beaten by their leader, Antonio Riaz, and dies in Horatio's arms. His body is taken back to Miami for burial (episode 501, "Rio").

He is also the father of an out-of-wedlock daughter, Madison (episode 208, "Big Brother"). When his supposed widow Yelina Salas discovers the existence of the girl, she initially believes that Madison is the offspring of Horatio, rather than Ray. Horatio is forced to reveal the truth when Madison requires a life-saving bone marrow transplant from Ray Jr. (episode 316, "Nothing to Lose").

Before his first faked death, Ray's partner was Detective John Hagen. The revelation of Ray's status as a dirty cop haunts Hagen, who believes that he constantly needs to prove himself. Ironically, it is a misdeed of Hagen's own, stealing evidence from a crime scene, that leads up to the disturbed detective's suicide. Tragically, in this same episode Ray reappears to beg Horatio's help (episode 324, "10-7").
