Rayf Ysanna

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rayf Ysanna is a character from the Star Wars: Dark Empire series of graphic novels, published by Dark Horse Comics. A Shaman Warrior and Jedi Apprentice, Rayf and his sister, Jem, first appear in the Dark Empire II series of comic books.

Rayf is 15 at the time he first meets Luke Skywalker and Kam Solusar on the Ysanna homeworld of Ossus. Following a battle with darkside forces, Rayf and his sister make the decision to go with Luke and become Jedi Apprentices. Their father, Okko, the chief of the Ysanna tribe, is not pleased with their decision, but he does not try to stop them. Rayf continues as a fairly important character in the plot from this point until his death in the Empire's End series.

[edit] Appearance

Rayf appears to be fairly short in stature (He appears to be shorter than Luke, who is not himself all that tall). Of average build, Rayf has wild black hair held back with a headband. He wears a grey jerkin and trousers, and a black leather vest which seems to be some indacation of rank among the Ysanna - only he and his father, the Chief of the tribe, are seen wearing one. He has dark eyes and his nose appears to have been broken at some point in the past. At his first appearance Rayf arms himself with a percussion rifle, but later fights with a Jedi lightsaber.

[edit] Background

(A lot of this is based on conjecture, as there is very little information, and what there is can be very contradictory)

When Luke first finds the two young Ysanna they are tied to a withered old tree. They have obviously been put here by the other members of the tribe, who are displeased when Luke and Kam free them. It is most likely that the tying up is some sort of rites - of - passage (Before this Rayf is clad similarly to other Ysanna warriors, it is only after this that he begins wearing the black leather vest). Raf shows the Jedi a Jedi Library hidden on the barren planet that his grandfather had told him of. The time soon comes for the two new apprentices to leave their homeworld, bound for exploits better covered in the Dark Empire main article.
