Queen Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah (born 19 August 1928 in Kathmandu) is the Queen Mother of Nepal. She is the second wife of King Mahendra of Nepal (1920-1972). Queen Mother Ratna belongs to the aristocratic Rana family and is the daughter of Late Honorary General Hari Shamsher JB Rana.
After the demise of her elder sister Crown Princess Indra, Ratna married her sister's widowed husband, the then Crown Prince Mahendra. Queen Ratna is the first woman in Nepal to go for family planning and decided not to have children for the sake of her elder sister's children.[citation needed]
Her Majesty Queen Mother Ratna Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah is famous for her social work for children in Nepal.
