The college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visweswaraiah Technological University, Belgaum. The departments are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The campus is located at the outskirts of the city and spans an area of about 56 acres.

RVCE leads the list in IT related education as per the ranking by The Board for Information Technology Education Standards (BITES) set up by the Government of Karnataka.

The college hosts a large number of department fests to improve student interaction. The institution has successfully imposed a "ban" on the ragging or hazing of freshmen students by seniors. The college does not allow the formation of student unions, and has both on-campus hostelites and day scholars.

The Department of Architecture is now an autonomous body with freedom in setting course work standards. The school hosts talks and seminars by a number of leading and innovative architects and designers from across the world.

RVCE encourages special interest groups and hobby clubs. Some of the active clubs are:
- RV Quizcorp is the Quiz club of RVCE. It is also the largest college level quiz club in India (soon to have its own entry in Limca book of records). It conducts India's largest college quiz fest "Under the Peepal Tree" each year.
- The Rotaract Club of RVCE actively involves itself in socially relevant causes. Affiliated with Rotary International District 3190, the club had carved a niche for itself in the area of blood donation. The Blood Donation Camp in 2006 witnessed a collection of 818 units of blood. The club members also involve themselves in National pulse polio drives, tree plantation drives and eye check-up camps.
- Vritanth is the IT Association of RVCE, which was founded in September 1998 with the objective of providing a forum for students interested in IT.
- Elektron is the Electrical & Electronics Club of RVCE.
- TeleTronic Club is the Telecommunication Club of RVCE. It publishes the newsletter 'Sanchar'.
- The Circle for Acting in RV - CARV is for the theater fanatics.
- The Debating society of RV - DEBSOC is one of the foremost debating societies in India. Its members have represented RVCE at the All-Asian Intervarsity Debating Championships held at Kuala Lumpur, where they won the 'Best New Team' Award. This debate follows the Parliamentary style of debating, which is an emerging style of debating in India. In 2006, they were grand finalists at the All-Asians; this is amongst the best performances by an Indian team in international debating.

- The R. V. Education Trust is the richest private education trust in India.
- RVCE has a museum on campus - "Kriya Kalpa", a technological museum devoted to the Indian contribution to the engineering sciences.
- The college has had very good cricket, badminton and chess teams. Students have regularly won laurels at university level competitions.
- SKIP - Centre for Social Service and Skill Promotion has been working since 5 years to help rural community and school dropouts.
