Talk:Rank insignia of the Galactic Empire
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WikiProject: Star Wars |
Here are some tasks you can do, as organized by WikiProject Star Wars:
- Collaboration of the week: List of Star Wars races
- Copyedit/extensive work: Yuuzhan Vong invasion, List of Star Wars ranged weapons, List of Star Wars podracers, Star Wars: Galaxies
- Expand: Mara Jade, Secrets of the Jedi, Clone Wars, Ambush at Corellia, Assault at Selonia, Showdown at Centerpoint
- Requests: All missing Star Wars Novels
- Stubs: Naddist...
- Other: See the things to do page
I'm interested in what sources were used to construct this. I looked at Saxton's insignia system (at http://www.theforce.net/swtc/insignia/ and it is different in several respects to the one here. HWelles 09:53, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

That was the same source I used. He had several different pages on the subject. A main chart can be found on one of the pages which is the primary source but there were other versions and additional badges, espeically for "version one". Also used info from the Timothy Zahn novels and several literature sources. Last, but not least, examined the pics in the game Star Wars Rebellion and Star Wars Alliance. The badges from Episode 4 are very hard to interpert. Ep 5 is much easier. In any event, the article is one interpertation on the subject. Maybe we can expand it to include other versions.
- Ok. I suggest that a sources heading would be appropriate listing your sources, given that this isn't taken from official material. Good work, btw. HWelles 12:16, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the constructive advice! The page is looking really good now.

I don't know where you guys got the images of the rank insignia, but the fleet admiral rank plaque is incorrect. There are three code cylinders, one on the left side and two one the right side (when you look at it). Like this: I (red) I I- B-101 17:12, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Should we have a page about the uniforms of the Empire?- B-101 17:33, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Episode III
Try to get a picture of the officers from Episode III when you can, legally.- B-101 11:26, 27 May 2005 (UTC)
- I believe clone Commander Cody wore an early Colonel insignia on his armor in scenes with Obi-Wan... at least that's my impresstion from the film. DmitryKo 08:21, 9 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Well, a picture shown in Clone_commander#Commander_Cody clarly has it that it's not a Colonel insignia, but rather 4 rank squares of different colors - I think they are Red, Yellow, Blue, Blue.
- This is more prominent in the pic of Clone_commander#Commander_Ace - this time, Red, Blue, Yellow, Blue). Hmm... --DmitryKo 23:36, 7 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Stormtroopers
I added the passage about Stormtrooper shoulder guards. Does anyone know the actual rank these signify? Custodes 08:04, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Who removed it and called it fanon? It's from an official source, the Star Wars Visual Dictionary. I've put it back where it belongs. Custodes 09:50, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Original research and conjecture
I have tried to remove the original research and conjecture from this article, with what remains being the facts (as basing conjecture on the known facts is original research). Telltale weasel words for such conjecture include "some fans say ...", "it has been speculated that ...", "many believe that ..." and so on. Reference such claims from reliable sources, or leave them out - this is an encyclopaedia. Proto::► 15:22, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
- Thats fine, but I would suggest not blanking the entire chart. Alot of it is form live action movies and productions. Here is the chart to work on here so the many images do not get deleted as orphans: -Husnock 16:10, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

- If you can weed out any that haven't appeared directly in films (i.e., get rid of the conjectured ones), then that's ok to go back in. But for those only referenced in books, unless the rank insignia was explicitly described in a book, then I would suggest an image of that insignia is very much conjecture. - These ranks were all in a video/computer game, weren't they? Jecowa 21:06, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

- Something needs to be done with those images. If they are truly non-free, they can only be in article space (you can link, but not transclude them, in talk space) and as they are not currently in an article, they would need to be deleted. Also, galleries of non-free images are generally agreed to not be acceptable on Wikipedia. I'm posing the question on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, though, because I really think these could qualify as PD-ineligible as they are just a series of shapes.
