Ramsay Township, Ontario

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ramsay Township is the southern half of the two townships that were merged to create the Town of Mississippi Mills in Lanark County, Ontario.

Originally settled in the late nineteenth century by Scottish and Irish immigrants, Ramsay township was among the premier wool producing areas in Ontario at the end of that century. Almonte, an incorporated town surrounded by the township was once known as "Little-Manchester" in reference to its thriving wool processing mills.

It was those mills along the Mississippi River that caused the amalgamated Townships of Ramsay and of Pakenham with the Town of Almonte to be named Mississippi Mills though there remain no active water mills and only one hydro-electric generation plant in the area.
